Smilie faces on boot up

I have a dual boot system of 98SE & XP Pro when I try to boot into the XP Pro partition all I get is a black screen full of small rectangle boxes with what appears to be smilie face inside each box, I'm sure they are scrolling down because the bottom row flickers now and then. I have run AVG with the latest updates on the 98SE partition and guess what no virus. Has anybody got a clue what this is and how to get rid of it.

certainly sounds like a virus. Do you have any NTFS partitions that the 98 scan is not seeing?

Hi jlanka, all my partitions are FAT32, I ended up using fixmbr but unfortunatly could not boot into anything, anyway I was due for a full format of the HDD in fact I'm typing this on my fresh format/XP install, Thanks for your thoughts.

Hmmmmm I wonder if it was a virus
