Told myself that now that I have a job, I'd snag a GTX 1080, or equivalent, on the conditions that I maintain this job until then, have wiggle room for money, and on the condition that I do well in school and keep up good health (lots of conditions).

Current GPU is a 970.

Main questions I have are:

1) Do we have a price estimate for the GTX 1080 yet?

2) Do we have any idea how it compares to the GTX 900 series? I know that it's supposed to have 4 stacks of HBM2 (compared to the FuryX's 4 stacks of HBM1), and since it's a whole new architecture it's supposed to have extra transistors and stuff, but is there anything solid on the performance difference? There's leaks regarding the fact there's 16GB and 32GB VRAM Cards coming out, but my assumption is that these would be specifically for Super Computers.

3) Do we know of any rumors or leaks as to when the GPU comes out specifically?

4) Would an i7-4790k CPU at stock speeds (4ghz quad-core) become a bottle-neck when used in conjunction with a high-end NVIDIA Pascal for gaming?

5) What resolution would you assume to be the "limit" for "ultra" next-gen gaming with a single high-end NVIDIA Pascal card for sufficient frame rates(GTX 1080 or equivalent specifically)?

Two good rumor websites to check out are:

Here's some Pascal news:

Nvidia gets first samples of GP100 from TSMC, begins internal tests

I think were gonna get a new brand with the HBM cards for Nvidia. We already have titan (black, x, z). Doesnt make sense for a titan A, B, YYZ. I hope we get something at CES and Im sure will get the cards before the summer.

I agree! I think the architecture in theory can have 10x compute however my guess is the next flagship will be 2 x as powerful as the Titan X.

people pay too much attention to that 10 times more performance lol. what's important is nvidia will be officially support FP16 in all their gpu with Pascal. right now only tegra x1 support FP16. the way i heard about it mobile gpu (SoC) has been using FP16 for a long time now. just that it is not commonly used by AMD and nvidia on the dekstop. and nvidia finds that stuff like machine learning are good enough to be done in FP16.

I found that the 560Ti got stomped on by the 660Ti which has in turn been kicked to the kerb by the 960, I'm only folding though so maybe they're better at something else.

Yeah good point to be fair, I should have specifically mentioned FP64 which was intentionally kerbed on kepler and maxwell I believe.

That's because they're "gaming" cards but they were/are still pretty good at OpenCL which is what the F@H client uses.

Stanford moved to an OpenCL client a few years ago because the AMD faithful were complaining about the unfair advantage that Nvidia users had, unfortunately for them that advantage remains because AMD cards are also pants when it comes to dealing with an OpenCL app!

You mean pascal based card that will replace 970 price point? If you were talking price wise specifically i'm not sure if the next x70 will also priced at 330. Historically nvidia x70 card were priced at 350-400.

470: $350
570: $350
670: $400
770: $400
970: $330

Depending on how the situatuon is at launch nvidia might put x70 version of pascal at $400. Now in the past few days we just heard something interesting. Heard that AMD delaying FuryX2 launch to Q2 2016 instead of releasing them in Q4 this year as early planned. It could mean Artic Island will be delayed in Q3 or even Q4 2016. Now that nvidia pascal was rumored to come out as early as late Q1 2016. Knowing that AMD doesn't have anything to counter nvidia new line up nvidia could play with the price to increase their profit instead.

Good point however there could be many reasons for the price difference of the x70 series.
Such as competition, the strength of the USD and cost of manufacturing.

I am curious as to how they will release it. The GTX 970 and 980 came way before any other cards in August 2014, the 960 and 980Ti came far later, the 950 and even later.

The xx70 will be $400 guaranteed. The GTX 970 is their best selling of the 900 series, so I totally see them jacking up the price. I don't expect the xx70 to be the best price to performance this time around.

It's definitely painful, and causes me to agonize over the mystery of "what's the min/max thing to do, given my current rig, the new GPUs that have come out over the last couple of months, and the lack of information regarding the Pascal / next-gen AMD release dates and performance benchmarks?"

In the end I always come to one conclusion:

When in doubt, wait it out.

The longer you wait, the better off you are when it comes to PC upgrades. A harsh truth, as I love the idea of upgrading the rig right here and now, but we'll save more and get better performance the longer we wait.

I know what you mean. I personally am waiting to upgrade my monitor, graphics card, and corsair fans since there are new models coming out "soon" (ie. OLED monitors, Pascal, next gen corsair fans). The agony is that you have to rely on rumors, not actual facts. 🙁

Hence just upgrade your stuff when you need it instead of playing waiting games. Here is a fun fact: Pascal will come out in 2016. But there also talks about Pascal will be short lived as nvidia will have Volta ready in 2017 (they have supercomputer contract that has to be done in 2017 and it's confirm to use volta instead of pascal). So when pascal arrive next year will you wait for Volta instead? 😛
