I have a soft v90 voice speakerphone modem. When I try to get it to dial I
hear nothing. I went through the troubleshooter, no luck. I have tried to
install the manufacturer's driver, no luck. I think there must be a
configuration I am not setting correctly. Any help?

Do you have the phone line pluged into the correct jack.
One is for a phone and the other is for the phone line.

Without the driver, it (modem) cannot function. If you check Device
Manager is there a modems category shown?, If so can you expand
the category and see what if any modems are detected. Also look in
Device Manager's category and see if a "Other Devices" is shown.

You haven't mentioned which make/model modem this is.

For example, the Hummingbird V.92 modem, built off the SmartLink
modem chipset, has a number of postings on the net about how users
cannot hear anything from the modem, trying new drivers doesn't help,
running the "Modem Helper", I kid you not, that is what they call it,
locks up the computer tight. Etc.

Thus far I have confirmed that it will take the phone line off-hook.
But beyond that it seems to be a dead end, as far as XP goes.
Maybe there was a reason that a brand new V.92 modem with fax and
voicemail and call waiting and blah blah blah was $9 at Fry's.
