I am looking for a 21" monitor. Obviously Sony is the most expensive one. If I don't care the price, just fine dot pitch, is there any other can beat Sony??? Could someone who has F500R 21" FD Trinitron tell me how it is please? BTW what is Aperture Grille pitch? Is it a real pitch or somewhat fancy name??? Thanks in advance!!

I think the aperture grille pitch is the horizontal dot pitch
they are refering to!

If you don´t care about price , then there´s no other option!
Sony it is!

P.S: You´re a lucky Son of a Gun if you buy a 21" Sony Monitor! ;-)

Maybe so, but not as good at image quality!
Sony´s image quality is unbeatable!

Well, why don´t you see for yourself?
Go to a Computer store to the monitor section and look at a Sony then at the others and tell me which one has the better image!

I already did this! And because of it i bought a Sony G-200,
the best 17" monitor (Sure , its not cheap!), with no conscience problems and without any doubt! There was no way around it!

You don´t have to believe in one person but if the majority
of people say the same thing wouldn´t you believe them right?

Mainly because most computer stores to not carry the high end Sony, Hitachi or Cornerstone monitors.

The typical retail environment has a number of disadvantages. Most retailers will hook many monitors up to one computer and by "splitting" the video signal across many monitors will reduce the image quality. Secondly these monitors are adjusted and unadjusted many times a day by curious users and this can mislead the buyer. Finally, because every monitor off the production line is unique, the unit you take home may not closely resemble the display model.

BTW I have evaluated these monitors side by side in my lab, it happens to be my job.

So that´s whay you are recomending the Cornerstone (Which i never heard about! And i thought i knew all the brands!)

Home turf, uhm?

Now , for the facts!
p1600 vs F500R!
117 Khz v 121 Khz! Equivalent? Not damn liquely!
Viewable are😛1600:400 mm x 300 mm
F500R:404 mm x 302 mm ---> Sony´s Bigger!
Refresh Rate: p1600 :1600*1200 --> 94 Hz
1280*1024 --> 109 Hz
1024*768 ---> 143 Hz
Sony : 1600*1200 --> 98 Hz
1280*1024 --> 115 Hz
1024*768 ---> 153 Hz
I think the numbers speak for themselves on this one!
CRT Type: P1600:Shadow Mask --> Best for text aplications!
Sony:Flat Aperture Grill --> Best for Graphics and has flat CRT that may reduce glare in certain lighting conditions!
Tell me who´s going to use a 21" monitor to text based aplications? What a waste of money!

The only point you could make a stand is the price!
But, think for a moment! Anyone who´s buying a 21 " monitor
is not likely to have money problems!
So your argument falls from the base!

And you say its your job to compare monitors?
It seems you are not doing a good job!

P.S: Think again before pissing a possible costumer!

Mitsubishi´s monitors are almost as good as Sony´s !
Almost , but not quite! (BTW , they´re my 2nd favourites!)
If you look carefully you will see that the dot pitch of the Sony is .22 and the Mitsubishi .24!
If you want the comparable monitor you would better go with the G-500 which is the office model , the F500R is the Professional!

But , you would buy a great monitor if you go with a Mitsubishi!
And no, i don´t think the Cornerstone could beat the Mitsubishi in terms of image quality much less the Sony!

I do not try to hide who I work for look at my profile. My comparison of the f500R and the p1600 is based upon the horizontal scan frequency. And yes in my opinion they are equivalent. Both are capable of 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz the current industry standard. Yes theoretically the F500R could run slightly higher resolution and refresh rates, however your video card must support these.

You forgot to mention a few other facts.

P1600 5 year standard warranty, Sony 3 Years.
P1600 consumes 130-Watts Sony 145 Watts, here in California this is becoming a big issue
P1600 is slightly shorter, comes with right angle video and power cords so that you can push the monitor up against a wall saving desk space. Also the p1600 is 1% shorter in depth.
P1600 is 14.1% lighter

Price: P1600 $839 Sony is greater than $1,000

If you still want to compare specs compare the p1700 to the F500R

Who uses 21" monitors for text based applications, the over 500,000 21" monitors we have shipped over the last 16 years.

Sorry to piss you off, however general statements like brand "ABC" is better than brand "XYZ" are just not true. I'm not saying Cornerstone monitors are better than other brands or visa versa, even the best monitors sometimes do not perform as advertised.

I was just satint the important facts!
First , there´s not a single monitor that can handle the highest resolution of a Geforce2 (So , yes it can handle it)

The warranty doesn´t mean a thing!
The product can work for 5 years without a problem and as soon the warranty expires it can die! I´ve seen this happening!
The problem with the power i think is not a permanent one
so is not a big deal for Californians much less for people from other side of the Atlantic.
If the power plug is placed below the tube this argument is
droped!
The price , well as i said, i think that anyone that is going to buy a 21" monitor is not likely to have money problems! And what´s a 150$ between a Sony and a relatively
badly know brand?

Well, the Sony monitors have the reputation of being the best in graphics for some reason!

I have a Sony G-200 (The best 17" monitor!) and don´t have any complaints!

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for your very informative replies. You guys are experts. Are you also good at Flat Pannels? I heard they are not good for games, but I'd like hear it from guys like you if this is not too trouble. Thanks in advance!!

Older LCD monitors had slow pixel response times. This created a problem with moving images in games where streaks or ghosting occurred. Newer LCD panels are much better in this regard however I suggest you contact the manufacturer before you purchase and make certain they have a good return policy.

Good Luck

Can´t help you with LCD monitors!

One thing is clear , the LCD´s don´t spoil your eyes as much as a CRT!
For that reason alone i would recomend one!

I am typing this in front of my (2nd hand) Sony 21-inch GDM-F500, which I bought for about US$700.

This is probably the coolest monitor in the world. Vibrant and rock solid. For that amount of money I could have bought a 17-inch LDC monitor, but the image quality is no where approaching this Sony.

Recommended.

Not much to say, but I've seen LCDs against CRTs and the CRT just pisses on them. They are overpriced and underspecified. They do look nice and crisp, but this is matched and surpassed by many quality CRTs. Making their only real advantage being flat.

But I'm no expert so go see for yourself. LCDs look cool, but they just can't compare to a decent CRTs. Not as far as I have seen anyway.

And if nothing else you can get a bloody big screen on a CRT for what it would cost to put even a crappy 15" Budget LCD on your desk.

One question, when you say apperture grid is bettre for graphics, I always see graphics like autocad, deisgn etc... but does it means GAMES ? What I wanna know, is shadow mask or apperture grid better for games ?

You shouldn´t even ask this!

Apperture grid better for graphics!
Apperture grid better for games!
