i recently changed my 2nd computer( 1.66ghz,AMD athlon 2000+, 40g hard
drive, 256 ram) from SUSE linux to WindowsXP now i am
having a problem with my on board sound card...it is a AC`97 sound card
just like my other computer ...i hear the clicking and the hum on the
speakers but it will not operate for any cds or onboard programs. i did
reinstall the drivers that came with the computer but to no avail... what
can i do?, i checked for bad speakers but they work fine on my other
computer which has the same codec drivers.

please assist.

Try the below steps:
1. Launch the Control Panel
2. Double-click Sounds and Multimedia
3. Click on the Hardware tab
4. Select the AC'97 Sound Card
5. Click Properties (not Troubleshoot)
6. Click on the Driver tab
7. Click on the Update Driver button. This will start the Update Device
Driver Wizard
8. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device...
9. In the optional search locations, make sure the Microsoft Windows update
checkbox is selected.
10. Click on the Next button. The search will take a few minutes. Continue
with the install of the new drivers found. It appears that Microsoft has
elected to replace the AC drivers with SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
drivers.

Hope this helps,

Or you could simply go
Start> Control Panel> Sound &Audio Devices>Device Volume
