Hi there!
This is my first post here, although some might have heard of me before. I'm
the blind ADOM playing girl 🙂

I have a level 40 female dark elven wizard. I managed to get "absolutely
close" to Anssaria and prayed. I got Branaldin's cloak of Defense. Am I
crowned or pre-crowned. What's the difference and how do I recognize if I
have been "properly" crowned?

You were pre-crowned (or post-crowned). A pre/post crowning only results
in a single artifact, while a crowning gives you an artifact, an amulet,
and an intrinsic immunity (fire/cold/acid/lightning). To become crowned,
you need to be at an extreme of your alignment (L+ for lawfuls, N= for
neutrals, C- for chaotics); if you're not at this extreme, you'll be
pre-crowned instead.

Post-crownings are like pre-crownings, except after you've already been
crowned.

Also note that there is a limit to how many times you can get pre/post
crowned, based on how many artifacts have been generated and your level.

Level 40 eh? Looks like you're getting pretty far =) Good luck.

You can easily recognize a "proper" crowning by your blessed
status. Furthermore you will use up food at a slower rate.
I'd say you have been crowned, not precrowned. The cloak
suggests that. Your alignement was an extreme (either L+, N=, C-).
Precrownings require a normal alignement (e.g. L or C)

I'd recommend the guidebook for further spoiling, but since
you know of this group for long you probably did not read it
by choice ;-)
in case that's not true, here are the links:

Bzzzt! wrong. Brannalbin's Cloak of Defense is a crowning gift.
He got crowned. The rest of your description was correct, though.

brojek.

The easy way to tell is from the message you get when you pray - for a
regular pre or post crowning, the message is something like "Ye have done
great service to my cause" then the item lying at your feet. For a full
crowning, there are additional messages, along the lines of "ye art hereby
crowned to be my champion!" followed by one indicating what immunity you
were crowned with - "You feel prepared for the most chilling tasks",
"You feel that neither thunder nor lightning will be able to prevent the
success of your mission", things like that.

She, that is. Both the player and the PC. 🙂

Welcome to the group! Whereabouts in Germany do the two of you live?

Regarding your question, judging from the artifact you got, you've been
properly crowned. You get an artifact both for crownings or
pre-/postcrownings, but the set of artifacts possible for crownings is
quite small and depends on the class, whereas precrowning gifts are much
more random. Brannalbin's Cloak of Defense is one of the (five) possible
crowning gifts for Wizards.

If you've been crowned, you will also have received an amulet of your
alignment and a message that tells you that you have acquired some
immunity, for example "You no longer fear the heat of all hells
combined" for fire immunity. You will also have become permanently
blessed. You can check the status line to verify that this is the case.
"Blessed" should be listed there.

Unless she's running adom with ToGu's patch, in which case artifacts
normally only available through crowning may be generated randomly or
as pre-crowning gifts.
