suggestions on upgrades

So far this is everything I have, can yall give me some suggestions, or am I good to go with this stuff?

1) Good to see someone finally using the MSI NF4 board, I hope that you come back and tell us how it was. This is a board that has recieved very very good reviews on anandtech, and is compared to the DFI LP NF4. Unfortunately not very many THGC members seem to have used the MSI board as we are all biased towards DFI for OCing, but I am told that the MSI board is just as good in this respect.

2) I don't know what you are using this system for, but assuming that you are using it for gaming I would say that the A64 3700+ is a little bit of overkill. I don't really know what to say though, as usually I would say that you should save the extra money and buy a 3200+ and put the money towards a better GPU, but that GPU is pretty good. The next best GPU that I could suggest would be the 7800GTX and I think that is probably out of your price range (app. $550).

3) I have never used a HDD cooler. I don't think they are necessary. Even some of the most extreme users on our site (Mozz) don't use HDD coolers, they have found them to be a waste of resources, as have I. However, if you can justify this to me in some way then I will accept it.

4) You haven't listed RAM? Are you using RAM from a previous build?
 
I would buy a DFI or an Epox nforce 4 ultra mobo instead.
Do you realize that you need RAM? or you're going to reuse some old one. If you're going to buy it make sure to buy a paired kit of RAM. 2X512 will do.

But contrary to what dunklegend says I want you to try the MSI board as it has recieved great reviews as shown <A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2358&p=21" target="_new">here</A>. This review is for SLi boards, and I realise you are not getting the SLi board, but the rest of the board is virtually identical.
 
as of right now, i'm going to reuse my current ram, <A HREF="http://www.patriotmem.com/products/groupdetailp.jsp?prodgroupid=18&prodline=2&group=PC3200&catid=1" target="_new"> PDC1G3200LLK</A>,a 1 gb dual channel kit from patriot, i dont know how compatible it is with the msi, but based on what you said about the 3700 being overkill, i may go ahead and get the 3200 then get some better ram, preferably 2x512mb, based on yall's reccomendations.

I have that MSI board ... I'm not OC'ing it so unable to comment on that part of what Fishy wants to hear. But, I like the board -- and it was fairly easy to setup.

And, I did do the A64 3700+ San Diego chip ... I think it was worth it since I wasn't planning on OC'ing.

You'll love the Raptors... exactly what I did except two of them in Raid1. My message base in TheBat! screams on it - compared to what I had my message base loaded on previously ... which was PATAs 120GB Raid1. (we're talking approx 80,000 messages in the base). Just FYI.

That's the only thing I wanted to change on my rig when I built it. I would have loved to have those Raptors going in RAID1. Oh well, you can't always get what you want. It was either say goodbye to the second Raptor, or say goodbye to my sex life.
 
I'd go with a newer 7200RPM drive with 16MB cache. Just as fast as a Raptor... with a LOT more space.

I'd be interested in seeing some reviews/testing of the comparisons of a 10K vs 7200K w/16mb cache. Do you know of any out there?

I don't know what the differences are in these or if they are comparable -- but storage wise, I would have grabbed those instead of the 250s that I had gotten.

But - one thing I like to do is have a secondary/physical drive (preferrably in raid1) to help protect data in case of physical drive loss/crash.

Thanks Zor... will have to look at those 16meggers when I need more drives.

what's a good sata hd with 16mb cache, or are they all pretty much the same? on newegg, i only saw that maxtor had sata hd's with 16mb cache
