i suppose i will do just that! this is the first negative in my book about
microsoft products. i am surprised about this. they should want us to back up
with outside media. not everyone can afford to buy new software everytime
there is a loss in the computer. maybe something for them to think about!
thanks, ted.

You could also follow the advice in the Knowledge Base article and backup to
a folder on your hard disk, then use XP's CD burning capability to burn the
backup to a CD or DVD. Now your backup is in two places - good idea.

Sorry if Windows doesn't do enough for you. For others, it does too much.
The courts, for example.

Symantec's 'Norton' brand software is widely discounted and rebated. To give
some recent examples: Staples recently sold Norton Systemworks 2005
Premier - which includes Ghost 9.0 - for nothing, after rebates. I bought it
for my Dad. The rebates arrived within 4 weeks.

I recently purchased Norton Ghost 9.0 standalone from Buy.com for 3.99 after
rebates, with free shipping.

There are many other excellent backup programs available on the Internet for
free or at very low cost. To give just one example, look at the free
SyncBack program available at:
http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html.

With all the outstanding software available for little or no cost, only
fools don't backup.

To me, it is cheaper in the long run to just buy the media
that ntbackup will recognize. I use a rather large USB
external harddrive.
Those discounted softwares will not usually do the job
in WXP. I have wasted too much money on software
that doesn't do the job.

Funny...I've been using Ghost without a hitch for two years. I also got a
terrific price on Easy Media Creator and Zone Alarm Pro, and they work great
for me. Haven't paid a dime for Norton Antivirus since 2000, and I've never
been infected with a virus. I wonder what it is that I know that you don't.
