Hi,
On 16th December, I screwed myself and opened a virus link on messenger. I got confirmation from that person, that it's a virus, so I immediately installed Malwarebytes and Avira (normally I used only Windows Defender). I scanned with both of them, quarantined everything that came up and all was good.

However the problems started on 20th December when I got a notification from Avira that it blocked registry access that was caused by Malwarebytes trying to delete some entries. In that moment I decided to uninstall Avira with IOBit Uninstaller. Right after uninstalling, I rebooted my PC and low and behold, it's having seizures all the time. Even while opening simple programs, the overall speed of the PC is god awful. I looked at the Task Manager and saw that multiple of Avira's programs were still present on the system and running (including their antivirus). So I tried to uninstall the rest of it with their guides and registry cleaner. In order to uninstall Avira, I need to delete the Avira folder in C:/Program Data, however it doesn't allow me to. It states that I need to get Administrators permission even though I am the only user and administrator on the PC. So I tried doing everything they provided in the guide (safe mode, renaming the folder and then safe mode), but to no success. I heard that installing Avira once again and uninstalling it with their uninstaller might work, but no. I tried optimizing the PC with Advanced SystemCare, CCleaner, optimizing my SSD on which the OS is placed, defragmenting my other 2 HDDs and downloaded SecureAPlus to verify that there are no malicious apps or files (came out clean). Also ruled out the possibility of overheating since I've checked it with MSI Afterburner. I really don't know what to do at this point and I'm inching closer and closer towards doing a reinstall of Windows.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I also updated my graphics card drivers.

PC Specs:
  • MSI Z270 Gaming M7
  • Intel i7-7700k @4.2GHz
  • MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X Plus (running in 4K)
  • G.Skill TridentZ RGB 16GB 3000MHz
  • SilentiumPC Enduro 660W PSU
  • Crucial MX100 256GB SSD
  • Toshiba P300 3TB HDD
  • WDC WD100 1TB HDD

Also look in Resource Monitor and Process Explorer to determine if you can identify what is destroying performance.

Unfortunately, per @RARRAF things may be so far gone that a reinstall is needed.

May still be worth a look into Reliability History and Event Viewer for any error codes, warnings, or even informational being logged,

Try running the Windows built in Troubleshooters, The troubleshooters may find and fix something,

Lastly: sfc /scannow and dism are worth a try,

Just ensure that all...

I have been in the same situation it may require you to re-install not sure but it is a horrible piece of software best of luck.
Yeah, I tried their software and it didn't help. Now the Avira is completely gone from the PC but the horrible performance is still present. I believe that a reinstall is my only option in this case, but I'm gonna wait a couple more days and do more research.

Just ensure that all important data is backed up and verified as recoverable and readable.

Do you perhaps have a restore point from before the entire 'running slow' fiasco occurred?

I'd be leery of spending too much time on it, in light of that simply deleting partitions/ reinstalling Win10 takes about 5 minutes these days. (Yes, reinstalling your assorted drivers and apps, and then Win10 updates, will take quite a bit longer)

We can close the thread. It seems like me uninstalling Avira triggered something and I needed to update my Intel ME drivers. After trying for 2 hours, I managed to update them and the PC works perfectly fine.
