Is it possible to run some kind of a test on the 3 memory modules in my G6
400? I suspect that something is wrong with at least one of them. Possibly
it's the one original 64MB stick that was shipped with the system in '98.
Thanks.

You can just pull one at a time to see which one is acting up. I might
add, that my personal experience is that "bad" chips are ultimately the
result of poor contact either through dirt or not seating them properly.

To answer the question you asked, you want memtest, which has been
recently updated:

Thanks, guys. I'll take it from here. I hope.

Do a Google search for MEMTEST-86, go to the web site and download either the
software to create a bootable floppy or a bootable CD. Boot your system with
the resulting bootable media. It starts up and runs a first-rate diagnostic
automatically. If MEMTEST-86 identifies ANY errors at all, something is not
right. To isolate a bad module, run MEMTEST-86 with each of the DIMMs installed
alone in the system.

Note: to burn a bootable CD, you need CD burning software capable of burning an
almost-standard ISO image. Not all CD burning software is able to do so.

There are RAM testers out there but I have no idea whether they are
thorough and accurate. I can only imagine how one would calibrate such
a beast.

If you are needing a bootable test CD I think Knoppix is the best
alternative.
