Ya just upgraded to Ubuntu
WinBlows 7 is the most crash happy bit of cr$%$&&*P software.
Much happyer now.
I am sure that they will fix the crash bugs as time goes on.
But .. why fight and struggle with this rubbish.
Ubuntu FTW. (did I mention security, 4 x more speed at least, no crashing, too much software to play with..)

Hmm... how are those new games (ie CoD 4, Crysis, etc) running for you....?
/sarcasm

Talk about waiting til the last minute, Saturday night I finally finished installing full versions on all our pcs. Home premium for the kid, Pro for the wife and I. Still contemplating a home premium install on the wife's netbook running XP. Didn't have time to do the vlite installation like I wanted, but turning that stuff off is easy enough to trim it down. I think its about 15gigs with xp mode, avg, ms office, and a few other programs. not too shabby.

So far I really like pro, its running superfast on my SSD. Can't complain, had the free use of an OS for about a year!

Gmcd.. NEWSFLASH: IT'S NOT COOL TO HATE! Just so you know. It's one thing if you actually got a relevant point, but I doubt you even know what relevant means, so eh what ever.

I had to upgrade this weekend. Got to keep win 7, no way I'm going back to XP.

[citation][nom]dainsane1[/nom]...there is no point in win 7 vm ubuntu for me[/citation]
I am so annoyed with this 'ubuntu' nonsense! Listen, Windows (whatever version) is a mass market OS which neither tries nor pretends to compete with what may very well be a superior free alternative, but please don't even try to pass it off like your ubuntu is the sine qua non of operating systems. While it may not have the same issues as Windows, it has its own issues and shortcomings. For some, not having Windows is a non-option. That's just how it is.

I was running it but for now I switched to the latest release of Ubuntu Studio. I kind of like it but it has it's issues. I NEED PHOTOSHOP! Damn GIMP is JUST THAT. GIMPED. Ugh.

If for some reason you're still running Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100), today is the day that you'll to see bi-hourly shutdowns.

remove the word "to."

bi-hourly means twice per hour.

kthx

[citation][nom]mbmcavoy[/nom]My ~4 year old PC was running Win7RC, and I will agree it is "the best Windows yet"! Still, I rarely even used it, and I had to to tech support almost every time my wife turned it on.I was actually happy for this deadline to come - I finally convinced my wife to let me replace it with a new Mac Mini![/citation]

yeah! that 'll learn her to keep pestering you!

Of course I still had a Windows 7 RC machine still kicking around - up until 1 hour left to go before the shutdowns.

In this economy I can't afford to purchase a new copy of Windows 7. So it was back to Windows XP for me and I'm amazed and how much faster and crisper it runs with 1 gig of ram on a computer from 2006. Although Windows 7 should be a joy on any new computer, I have a love affair with XP again. I missed it. It's like an old friend.

XP is faster than win7 if you look solely at single app performance or low load performance. Indexing slows win7 @ idle in comparison. But once you use start using multithreaded apps and 4GB+ ram you'll notice xp becomming less good compared to win7.
As for pricing - is it really that bad? appearently a license + media package costs under 120€ shipped ; that's not really unreasonably expensive - it's no more than a decent cpu, motherboard or graphics card costs. I'm not certain about prices, but I think to remember a windows 2000 license was much much more expensive - and that in a time where money was worth more, making it even worse.

[citation][nom]randomizer[/nom]It doesn't actually shut down, it just hard resets on you without any regard for what you're doing at the time.[/citation]
Oh nice! durability test for the ntfs subsystem!

[citation][nom]frazerdavid[/nom]I jumped ship to linux this morning for this very reason.[/citation]

did the same a long time ago. no regrets, no looking back ever. oh yes, and the win fanboys rated us down again, like we care.

Since you're the one bragging about your choice, you must be the [misguided] fanboy really!
I bet you're just greedy or perhaps lying and merely want to start a mudthrowing contest.

I'm running Windows 7 rc and so far no shut downs. I have it installed on a new build I did for my wife last summer and she loves it. I have an oem copy of windows 7 pro ordered that should be here today. The only crashes I had was when they were running some windows updates test soon after I installed it since then smooth as silk.

i've been using the RC version and i'm going back to XP for now. I'll wait a bit for a few service packs to come out and hopefully price drops.

few things i didn't like about 7 over xp (never used vista)
-the start menu/programs popup folder is too much like windows explorer. i hate windows explorer.
-the "show desktop" button is way over to the bottom right on 7, very impractical spot, i used that button a lot on xp.
-internet explorer hangs more than i remember on xp.
- 7 is more cumbersome and time consuming when reloading itself after quiting a game. I may wait a full minute after quiting mw2 before i can load up IE without it hanging.
-it runs Crysis WORSE. I have to lower the specs to get it to run smoothly compared to xp.
-general window layout is different than what i'm used to, not better, notworse, just different. like the file, edit, view menu, things are different, annoying. display properties in the control panel, very different and less intuitive control imo.
-perhaps some of this can be changed through customization, but that would also be annoying to have to figure out and do.

What do you mean you used that button a lot on XP? You mean right click > show desktop? If so, that is still an option in 7.

Secondly, I feel your pain for the menus. Doing the simplest things in Word either takes 5+ minutes or a Google search whereas it would take me about 10 seconds on XP.
