With the trend in GPU manufacture being reduced TDP it seems unlikely that those kinds of units will get much reception for 95% of users. Even systems with quad cards may be unlikely to need anything that big unless they also have massive overclocks to both the GPUs and CPU. I guess if you have R9 295x2 quadfire plus an extreme overclock on the CPU you might. I can't think of any system where that would be necessary though aside from competitive builders looking for numbers or somebody with a serious multi-monitor 4K configuration.

Are you sure the noise is from your PSU and not your motherboard or graphics card?

I think GPU based bitcoin mining was a big driver of demand for those high power capacity PSUs.

GPGPU usage draws more power than when gaming.

Yup. The PSU wasnt even mounted to any PC, I just tested itself with power cord. It was buzzing when the switch was off, after 30? minutes the noise almost gone but when I turned on the switch the buzz came back.

That has to be transformer noise. They probably tested it and when it met all testing criteria they probably sent you the same unit back with the same noisy transformer.

Was the replacement unit in an entirely new shrink wrapped package or was it simply repackaged?

Is it normal for the Evga fan not to start up in eco mode even when gaming and benchmarking the GPU ? I'm not complaining as I love the silence just making sure it's normal.

Depends on how powerful the GPU is vs your PSU.

IIRC, that 2kW unit is 220-240V only. I'm not sure if they'd give him one, and if they did, could he test it? I think one of the Gutless Wonders was tested on a step-up transformer, but I don't think it would handle that kind of load.

I think I heard somewhere that dryer outlets in the US are split across phases and thus 220V - is that correct?

I made a "sign" on the old one, this one is a completely new one. Its doing totally the same. Even numbers differ on PSU. I messed up even the cable ties, these are totally untoched.

Must be that transformator, under stress it is not giving any kind of noise.

Going to RMA this one also, ill post some info after.

How about the Cooler Master GM650? I'm thinking Tier 3 as it's sole review I could find was ok overall, but used cheaper secondary caps and indications of high inrush current, maybe some other issues. Channel Well built.

Sorry for not replying to your past question. My gpu is the R9 290 tri-x sapphire and I have a amd 8320 stock cpu. Even when stressing both of these components at 100% the PSU fan doesn't spin. Is this normal ?.

I would not think that's normal. Does the fan response to load seem normal when it's not on ECO mode? In other words, does fan speed increase in proportion to the load? It might take several minutes under load for the PSU to achieve a thermal need for increased fan speed.

The fan seems to spin at the same rate when not in eco mode all the time. When in eco mode and at full load I even tried to use a hair dryer to activate the fan but it didn't activate. I also noticed last night when at full load I turned eco mode off and back on the fan span. Sorry if this is confusing lol.

Another issue is when it's in normal mode there is a funny noise which distinctly stops when switched to eco mode must just be the fan.

I was thinking about getting this PSU instead : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MFD3KZC/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=171Y52VA7T618TH06ADJ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455345507&pf_rd_i=468294

I want a quiet PSU, the supernova g2 is great when in eco mode but I am concerned about the fan on my PSU if it did actually spin up it would be great. Just simply looking for a quiet reliable PSU. Think im going to buy some noctua fans also, as my case fans are loud as well.

I don't think you need a different PSU. It doesn't get a whole lot better than that G2. What I THINK you should do is contact EVGA and explain your specific issue in detail and see what they say. Explain that you've already had to RMA it once due to the coil whine issue (I think you did anyhow, can't remember) and that the fan doesn't seem to be kicking on when it's in ECO mode, even under loads. It's possible your unit is simply not being pushed hard enough by your hardware, even under load, to need additional cooling. What are your CPU and GPU specs? Any overclock?

Thanks for the replies. I had a supernova g1 650w previously which i simply returned not RMA. It's a free return with no questions asked via amazon. And yeah my specs are just the 8320 at stock speeds 3.5ghz and the r9 290 tri-x which is factory overclocked to 1000mhz core and 1300mhz memory I thought this would be enough to make the fans spin in eco mode.

I can simply return this one and I dont mind paying an extra £20~ for a quieter PSU.
What do you think of the Hx 750i ?

By the way is the version of noctua fan any good ? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Noctua-NF-F12PWM-Case-Fan-120/dp/B00650P2ZC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422917300&sr=8-1&keywords=noctua

I was thinking about replacing the intake, exhaust and cpu heatsink fan with one.

Edit: Just read up abit and I realize now there's different fans for case fans and heatsinks so maybe one of the above fan I linked and 2 of these ? : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BEZZBFO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A38F5RZ72I2JQ

Oops, yeah it is there, must've missed it. My mate has used it for a while and he says it does the job pretty well for him. Maybe he just got lucky with a good one haha.
