just use the stock paste it will work fine i have an amd 3700 currently in
an asus sli32 deluxe running at 2607mhz and before that i had the same only with a msi sli mobo and it was at 2508 mgz until the msi mobo quit on me AND THEY WERE BOTH USING THE WHITE LITHIUMGREASE
LOOKING THERMAL PASTE FROM RADIO SHACK AND RUNNING AT 78F
FOR THE MSI WITH STOCK HSF AND 80F WITH A ARCTIC FREEZER 64PRO ON THE ASUS MOBO WHICH IS STILL RUNNING FINE AT 2607MHZ

I guess that your cap lock key got fat after eating your punctuation...

Ok, so basically all warranties come down to the manafurecturs claiming 'misuse' or 'abuse' at you?
You could have followed all there little rules and they still could claim against, and it would be up to you to prove you didn't, right??
So meh.

On topic - a quality grease like Artic Silver is great - provided you are careful when applying! Same with alcohol - i have always used it cautiously by dampened a cloth with it, and then rubbing.
I mean seriously, you are working with delicate electronics! You are obviously gong to be careful not to spill any fluid or grease around!

And it is best to get a quality HSF if overclocking. Like an all copper zalman solution. I am pretty sure stock coolers would have a lot lower thermal conductivity than artic silver would be putting out!

yo there,

anything that carries floating, charged particles can conduct electricity and short/fry something so yes fluids r dangerous - but not so much alcohol, provided that it's at least 95% in concentration, becoz it will evaporate rather rapidly (which is what we use to dry suction bulbs in labs - they r a bitch to dry!). so long as u leave it for a few mins after application, chances r, u r fine.

on the other hand, 'grease' or polymer of any kind, do NOT conduct electricity - which is exactly what the Arctic Silver Ceramique is claimed to do:).

hope it helps

I think he was joking. Everyone in here should know nothing in a computer gets hot enough to boil cooking oil.

Then again... maybe not. ;-)

yo man, i would actually like to point out that cooking oil could boil at as low as 75 degree Celsius:), depending on the type of oil u use, most of them boil at 75 to 90 degrees - a lot lower than water.

and ur average P4 will easily 75 on stock HSF on a warmer day:-D.

Did you pull those temperatures out of your arse? I think you did...

Safflower - 510 F (266 C)
Soybean - 495 F (257 C)
Corn - 475 F (246 C)
Peanut - 440 F (227 C)
Sesame - 420 F (216 C)
Olive - 375 F (191 C)
http://van.hep.uiuc.edu/van/qa/section/States_of_Matter_and_Energy/Boiling_Evaporating_and_Condensing/20010430135040.htm

The boiling point of olive oil (570 degrees Fahrenheit) is much higher than the smoking point (375 - 400 degrees F) and would be a very dangerous temperature to try to achieve on a home stove. It would certainly ruin the oil and would be close to the flash or fire point (around 600 degrees F) and the danger of a conflagration would be great. (When you are deep frying and you see the oil "boiling" you are actually seeing the water in the batter or food boiling, not the oil.) A more useful temperature would be the smoke point.
http://www.oliveoilsource.com/cooking_olive_oil.htm
(i'll do the calculation for you, 570F is 298C)

<< … what is the boiling point of the "average" … vegetable cooking oil?>>
It is approximately 400° F. As you may know, the important consideration in cooking with oils is the smoke point. The smoke point of oils varies widely and generally you want to fry using oil with a high smoke point. For this reason peanut oil is one of the best with a smoke point of 440°.
http://experts.about.com/q/Home-Cooking-3204/Boiling-Points-Cooking-Liquids.htm
(again, 400F is 204C)

and ur average P4 will easily 75 on stock HSF on a warmer day:-D.

Uhhhh no. Try something under 55C. No Pentium 4 that I'm aware of every ran above 55C with stock cooling.

Now go away little guy. And go try to fry something with oil at 75C. LOL.

I certainly wouldn't take a rejection from AMD for using commonly accepted TIMS lying down. Legally they can't even abuse their warranty like that. Well, maybe they can. Maybe they can't. That'd be for a court to decide. But legally they shouldn't be able to. The problem is that courts and law don't always coexist like they ideally should, so what should be cut and dry under law may not actually be the court's decision. Damn US judicial system.

Anyway, I'm sure if AMD gave you a hard time over using an 80+ percent alcohol solution to clean off a TIM, or over using a different TIM than they didn't specify in their warranty, you could always mention terms like "Better Business Bureau", "Lawyer", and "Court" and they'd be likely to turn around and be more helpful.

Now, as for why they can't legally hold using AS5 against you is this. The retail warranty comes in the box. The retail warranty does not specify any such clause against a TIM, where it does specify against a 3rd party HSF. Further, no other documentation warning against the use of 3rd party TIMs is provided in the box. Therefore, AMD cannot prove that you have read x, y, or z from their website, and thus cannot legally use that as a loophole under their abuse clause, because this is something that does not fall into the category of common knowledge.

Granted, I'm not a lawyer. I've just seen this more times than I can even count on the various small claims court judge shows on TV. It's always the same every time, and it comes up an awful lot. If you don't give the customer the information for non-obvious warnings, exemptions, etc., then you're always SOL. It doesn't matter if you make the materials available in any way, shape, or form, no matter how simple and convenient. You have to actually give the customer those papers or deliver the warnings verbally. AMD doesn't include them in the box, AMD can't claim you knew not to do something non-obvious, AMD isn't protected should you do something non-obvious.

Now that might be different with registered system builders or some such if AMD actually such a program and requires certain materials to be read before you can be a part of it. But for the regular joe buying their procs...

As for overclocking though, that's pretty obvious to an extreme majority that it's abuse, and hence falls under their warranty. Only a complete clue would expect otherwise. So AMD is protected there.

I had NO problem with AMD.

The warranty is clear contract and it cowers ONLY defects in "materials and workmanship", should there will be found that there is NO defect in materials AMD at its option has NOT breached the warranty contract.

So what are materials defects?
impurities or SOI insulators leaks.

There is NO chance that you would win the case when under the electron microscope it can be proven that ther was NO defects in materials or workmanship.

All they need to do is to look at the structure of crystals!
So be aware that AMD acts in GOOD FAITH!

the excessive temperature can be proven by color deviation of crystals under the electron microscope.

The ammount of heat generated by any modern processor is barely if at all enough to cook anything.
Unless you use EZ Bake Oven recipies.

But yeah, you're not going to be able to cook much. Still, with a specially designed heatsink you could cook an egg. And with the right design you should be able to make some tea. :D

You're not even making sense. It's obvious that there's a pretty major defect if the chip at stock is running so hot that it dies under the retail cooler with AMD's suggested TIM or better (such as AS5) in a case with average (or better) ventillation. That's clearly a materials or workmanship defect.

If that happened to me, I wouldn't hesitate to RMA it. And if AMD fought me on it, I'd fight them tooth and nail. So what's your point?

And what the heck does an electron microscope have to do with the price of tea in China? Heck, what does crystal structure have to do with workmanship? That's only materials.

I'd suggest you stop talking about things you clearly have no knowledge about.

LOL. I can't believe he said that. Like even if AMD had an electron microscope, does he really think they're going to slide a processor under it??? You can't even do that. I guess he thinks an electron microscope works like a traditional one.

I speculate that this goes through his mind in regards to AMD warranty investigations:

"Hmmm... this processor looks fried. Hey Sven, would you please take a sample of this processor's die and analyze it under the billion dollar electron microscope? Cause ya know, we don't have anything better to do with this thing... like research. Now Sven, be sure to scrape off all the heat spreader material; can't get to the die without removing it! Yes... hmm... I have nothing better to do with my PhD than analyze whether or not Slvr voided his warranty by overclocking... yes... mmm..."

First off how much do you think it costs Amd or Intel in material to make a Processor?

Probably a lot less then they would pay some one to inspect one to find out if it was fried or whatever, by unwarrantable means. They have plenty of other work they could have this person do.

Do you honestly think they are going to waste manpower on this when they are fighting to stay alive against Intel?

So it's rather unlikely they are going to spend any amount of money on the type of equipment you are suggesting.

If they did it would be used in ways to make the processors better or find flaws, not discriminate because they got an returned "DOA" processor.

how about canola oil?

and i think u made a mistake - those temperatures r when those oil become 'smoke' (i would call that sublime). heavier oils (with a long aliphatic chain of carbons, for example) have a higher molecular weight and stronger intermolecular instantaneous dipole moments - too complex for ur little brain to comprehend.

i actually know something about chemistry, unlike some - BIG guy (with nothing more than skull). i bet u r one of those big, fat and certainly ugly ones that sits on ur arse all day with nothing better to do than trying to prove EVERYONE wrong using Google (lmfao) - one piece of advice, get a LIFE!

oh about the P4, just shows how much u really know about hardware - http://www.silentpcreview.com/Sections+index-req-printpage-artid-233.html a 2.8Ghz could reach 67 degrees celsius underload - notwithstanding ambient temperature. in hotter climates (again atmospheric pressure and humidity also play a role - more parameters for ur non-existent brain to consider), those numbers could rise dramatically - and that's without OCing.

i am usually not this rude to other ppl but i was trying to have a civil discussion with ppl, and all u know is to mouth off at other ppl and put them down - if u were abused too often at school (wouldn't surprise me) then pls go and see a cousellor.

'The exact temperatures will also depend on how pure the oil is.

The boiling point estimates that I've found are pretty sketchy'

if u even bother to read the so-called piece of 'evidence' that u found. again atmospheric pressure plays a role.

please, if u really have time, go and get a part time job and get urself a degree before u start talking - just grabbing the first line u found of Google simply isn't enough.

a logical piece for u to consider - how would u be able to reach those temperatures with a HOUSEHOLD stove? yet u do see smoking with ur cooking oil - that question is enough for u to spend a year of study on it. and pls this time, don't just use Google to prove other ppl wrong coz u r just making urself look more stupid that u already r - which is previously thought impossible:-D.

hey man, really, don't waste ur time with him - his skull is perhaps better than any kevlar ever made by mankind, and his punitive knowledge proves that he's always right (with Google) in his own little world.
