There are ways around getting caught. The problem is not being able to fold under your name 🙁 You'd have to use some random one, or better yet, have it pick a diferent name everytime. As long as THG gets credits for the WU's 😛

on the other hand, b0rging brings discredit to what is primarily a good cause. so yes, it would be nice, competitonwise, but it soils the reputation of the whole community which far outstrips the few points you'd be earning.

edit: w00t! we're no. 90! 😀 *applause to all who helped*
KEEP FOLDING, FOLKS![/b]

Yup, if know someone at THG who is borging, tell me, and I'll go fold for a legit team.
There have been a couple of teams that passed us by using borging. I think of them as slimmy cheats.
In the early going, someone borged me a couple of times. Two rigs that cost me $7 each in electricity a month. Those slimebuckets are scummy crooks.
Since then, I have folded for over 300k points for THG, but I came that close to quiting.

adding a computer today (sig one) might add my laptop today or tommorow (2.4 intel) unless it overheats and my 600 P3 after i get a new graphics card for it (radeon 8500 died RIP)

i wish i could get my school to run folding@home, that would be about 250 (~2-3.4 ghz) computers added instantly to the folding@home network, although, the school would probably make their own team or something.

HOly crap, I went home for the weekend and when I returned I found the largedt WU i've ever seen in progress on my comp. 20000 Frames. I didn't believe it but I opened the graphical client and it is indeed 20000 frames. Craziness!!! lol

I assure everyone that my discussion of the topic was purely hypothetical. If I was b0rging (though the thought has crossed my mind):

1) my production would be much higher.
2) I wouldn't have a apartment frigin' filled with compaq computers (my friends think I'm completely wacked).

@h2o2 Welcome!

@Ara Try and do it for a project. See if you can get a teacher on your side.

@stoppard. Which WU?? Is it on this list or the beta one?

@ cunning:.... its p 2107 lambda
16s/frame

it's toward the bottom in left hand link, not the beta.

If you dont mind my asking, where do you find all those pc's without spending a ton of cash?
I wouldn't mind setting up a farm, I've wanted to learn more about networking, would be a fun project.

Do you overclock em or just run stock?

eBay brother. I actually bought them to resell 'em. I haven't gotten around to that, but the farm is growing
No point in OCing a socket 370, I just upgrade the chips. The chipset is an Intel 810. They came with crap Celeron 500s no SSE. They'll run P3 1000s. I've gotten a couple large lots of procs from eBay. Actually, I just won another auction for 73 processors 😀

not too familiar with intel, how much do the chips usually cost?
I guess what i'm really asking is about how much should I pay for a socket 370 machine, what chip do you reccomend, +how much is reasonable to pay for them?
will just be using them for folding so I could use the advice.

regarding a 20'000 frame WU, the first WU i ever did was one of them but ive found that it is not the number of frames that define how long it takes but the FPS that is the key. i would imagine it would be about 15 or less FPS.

Awww you take the fun out of it lol. I was just shocked at the frame count, let me have my moment pls 😛. Anyways, anyone know if we can fold on a palm pilot? LOL (just a thought)

haha i just got my X2 4400+ running two instences of FAH and i got a 2.4ghz dell a 900mhz HP and a old ass compaq that im gona set up folding on knoppix QUESTION: is it worth it to set up a folding farm with only 2 clients (3 computers)?

Show off... lol. Setting up a farm for just 3 copmuters probably isnt worth it. All you would really need to do is setup each one up then yank the monitor, keyboard and all that if you already have the harddrives. You setup diskless clients when you are trying to go uber cheap and use them only for folding, but if you already have a full comp around why cause extra work?

I don't get what you mean about 2 clients (3 computers)? You'd need one client per comp or core. I'd suggest running 2 console clients on your X2, 1 as a service the other not (easy to shut it off to play games). I'd set the other 2 comps (dell and hp) on deadline less WU's and take batches, so you can throw them in a corner and plug a monitor/keyboard/mouse/internet in once a week to send what they've done.

I have an X2 3800, and a 2.4 celery and thats what I do. Just my 2 cents although I dont have enough network cards or my celery wouldn't be doing deadline less WU's as it would have an internet connection.

oh i just got both intences running as client that i open whenever i go to bed/school or am not playing games or devin. as for the other computers i was actualy going to get a switch and hook em all up since thats only like 20 dollers. folding is fun!

With an X2 I'd keep 1 client as a service, unless your games have a dual core patch.

I keep the service one running 24/7 and the other one I shut off to game. I've posted screenshots of my setup a page or two ago if you wanna see.
EDIT: Pics on page 26. They dont show the service one but you can see the non service one in the task bar.

The only time I'd have both off in your case would be if "devin" means programming/compiling, or your game can use both cores. Also if your power bill is your concern I've found that my AMD X2 3800 with 50% usage ( 1 core 100%) 24/7 is about the same cost as my Celery 2.4ghz 30 hours a week.

Also Yes folding is very fun.

Just search around eBay. Generally, barbone systems (no hard drive) are pretty cheap. If you set one up as a server, you don't need disks for the others.

Farm Update: RMA'd my switch. The new one works like a charm. A+ to Netgear's customer service.
Added two more clients today too 8)

Now it's time to explain to my boss at work why we need to run F@H at work

BTW don't forget to vote (bottom of my sig) for our own forumz space!

If you want to stop a F@H instance of the console that is installed as a service,
run "services.msc" (no quotes from a "run" box thingy).
Scroll down to FAH@C:+whereverIt'sLocated,
right click on it and select "pause".
That's what I do.

Hey is anyone doing thoes err "advanced" WU's i think they were called I saw somthing about them only being able to be run on intel cpu's and ice got a 4400+ but im not sure if that means for just QMD? are there other types of advanced WU's??

since i have an AMD cpu if I have BigWU on and i have advanced on will it give me QMD or will it know ive got an AMD?

AND finally if I cant have both flags on due to having an AMD cpu is it better to have bigWU on or just advanced on???

ive got 2 gigs of ram so I would love to use it thats why I ask

WOW! Way to go EntityAnomly. How many machines you have running now?

BTW, did some quick math for you.

it'll take you 13,685 days at your current rate to catch sjonnie.

...thats 37.5 years.... ouch.

LOL yea I figured it'd take forever.

It's around 20 machines, mostly P4s or Xeons. I wonder if I should bother setting up a bunch of P2-P3s? Don't know that they would help much.

If you don't have to worry about the electrical bill, why not.

might take you only few years to catch sjonnie if you did

Update. you moved up and sjonnie down, casue you now have a listing of 7104 days

...hell if you keep this up, add those machines... you might catch him in a years or so.

All I'm really running is P3 class chips, and my daily production is almost half of yours.

Right now the two p4s and one AMD64 keep getting p2306_BBA5_pfold in water for 188 points. They take over a day.

I have a celeron 733 that takes about 5 days to do p2107_lambda_5way_melt_4_10011 for 404 points.

So, at the sake of putting your production well out of my reach,
Hells yeah! Make those suckers fold.

I haven't really experimented with the "accept large WU" setting on my boxes. They are all set to NO, because most of their ram is set as a disk for the OS. Furthermore, they are running the minimum recommended for diskless clients. If you have the space and ram, you may want to try it.
