at least you have a 3400+

I have an xp 2600+ :x
course I oc'd it to 200mhz FSB x11.0

I had to work for those extra clock cycles

Well cunning, there are a lot of people here who are better at networks than I, but as usual, I'll toss in my 2c.
It sounds like a crappy crossover cable, but try a little basic checking.
Hook up only your best computer, then try to ping the static IP of the switch. Then try to ping the router. The crossover will not affect pinging the switch, but it will affect pinging the router.
If the auto setting is dropping you to the lowest denominator, pinging will return good times for bothe.
The biggest problem with muti-port switches is that one bad nic cable can tie you up for hours. If you can get one computer to work, you just add one at a time, until you have a problem. Then figure out if the problem is coming from the port, the cable, the nic card, or it's driver, or just put that unit aside, and go on to the next one.

If you want to try getting a seperate forum, you should start by PMing one of the mods. Since DH is a mod, and a folder, staring with him would be a good idea.
After you have him on your side, try PMing steve sa, who is the forum developer. He will probably try to put you off, since he can claim no control over content. Just try to get him on your side anyhow.
The top dog is the Managing editor, named Omid Rahmat. His user tittle in the forums is saintbabs.
Good luck.

With regards to the switches, personaly I would stick with what works. Buy some cheap ass 16 switches and daisy chain them. Sounds simple in theory :)

As for farms, I really wish I could afford to start one. I'm in college and therefore poor as hell heh, but I have an Accouting internship coming up that should be highly profitable and provide some funds to start my own farm.

I know the clients can be cheap, so let me see if I get this right. Each client needs a Mobo/CPU + NIC and what else, I feel as if something is missing. I was looking on Ebay or some good deals, can anyone recommend some good value procs? I was looking at P3's due to the cheap ram (256mb for $35 new lol).

I really want to put my networking class to good use and this seems like a societly beneficial way of doing it.

Also, Cunning you still have any of those 120 compaq's FS? :)

Some? LOL
I'll point you in the direction of my upcoming ebay auctions.

As far as farm computers, go low power & high MHZ, but you need SSE etc. I have some of my compaqs getting gromacs now. A 733 celeron with SSE does the same WU in 25% of the time a 500 w/o.

There are many ways to run diskless clients CD, USB, hard drive. Or my favorite, netbooting. As long as you can dedicate a rig to a server, the other ones just need network, ram, MB and proc. Quick and dirty How-to.

Netgear's customer support was actually pretty good. They are sending me a new switch plus shipping for the old one. We'll see what happens.

@ endyen A bad cable? It never crossed my mind. Perhaps I should invest in a tester? Would a larger switch be more susceptible? The same cables work with the small switches.

Close F@H and then run the F@H program with the "-configonly" flag like so:

"fah502-console.exe -configonly"

THen go through configuration and put Yes when the option to install as service comes up.

The size of the switch does not matter, it's the length of the cables you use that matter. lol

Your smaller switches work just as good as a tester. If they work on the small switch they should work on the big switch.

Good, i like to hear that of 120 you can't used them all LOL. Anyways I'm eyeing a lot of 20, and one of 8. I plan on getting a Dell Optiplex GX 150 1GHz p3 for server and then just net booting the night away with whatever POS clients I can find.

Netboot + $50 clients = 50000000M POints/day lol 😛

not sure if this has been covered yet but I just joined today and ive got 4400+ X2 any way i could run to intences of this at once like at night time because it only takes up exatly 50% of my processors which is only one of em

Its easy, just make two folders and put a copy of the F@H files in the second folder (except for the files related to the current work unit youre working on in the first folder, usually the work folder and queue file and maybe another one or two files).

You then need to configure each client in each folder. I would recommend making a batch file named configure.bat (which is just a text file with the .BAT extension instead of .TXT) in each folder that has the following command:

FAH502-Console.exe -configonly

Then run it (while F@H is not running) and select to edit advanced configuration options and set a different MachineID for each core. You can set the first core to 1 and the second to 2.

once you have configured both, you can make a batch file in each of the two folders that will start each instance of F@H. Just make a batch file called runfah_1.bat or runfah_2.bat and put this in it:

FAH502-Console.exe -local -verbosity 9

the -verbosity 9 flag will give you more details about the work unit you are working on but you can leave it out if you dont want it. Just make sure you use the -local flag so that F@H uses the configuration settings in the folder its stored in.

Damn you ppl and your dual core.... guess i need to OC my 1 core more to keep up 😛

Copy your FAH folder.
Delete queue.dat and the work folder.
Open the client.cfg with notepad.
Change "machineid=1" to "machineid=2".
Start the client (and make appropriate shortcuts or reg edits, depending on how you start FAH). Give it a moment to benchmark and download a WU and perhaps a core.
Check to make sure both cores are at 100%.

Note: This is based on the assumption that you are using the console client. I do not believe you can run two instances of the graphical one. You can do one console and one graphical. If you are using the graphical client, switch to console versions and get a monitoring program like EMIII for maximum production.

That's the thing EA. They all worked on the small ones. I ended up having to boot them on a small one and switch the plug to the 50 port (same cords). In my infinite wisdom, I came up with WTF?

I now have all of the ports set to 10 full, and at least those clients can still update, most of the time. :x

Here's the thing, even if additional testing turns up that autoegotiate is the issue, why would the stock settings set ALL ports to do it? (not to mention changing them on the web interface is a 30min job)

Hopefully, the next one will be better.

@stefan This switch will actually autonegotiate each port seperately. I've seen it do that.

I just posted in Home -> Community -> Feature Requests For a seperate F@H area

I also posted in Home -> Community -> Structure here

They both link to the poll where I would like to focus the discussion outside of this thread.

Quick Questions:
Would a seperate area decrease our visability?
Could the thread be locked with a redirect?

I'd really like to make this happen; I'm trying to build a bit of support before I aproach the mods.

Unless someone else Entity*cough*Anomly*Cough* would like to take on the challenge sooner. 😀

Would a seperate area decrease our visability?

Depends on what level the area is located. Currently we at least have some visibility because our sticky is in one of the highest viewed areas. If we can keep it somewhere in the Hardware or near the top of the software or community we should do fine.

Could the thread be locked with a redirect?

idk that'd be a question for a forum developer.

Unless someone else Entity*cough*Anomly*Cough* would like to take on the challenge sooner. 😀

lol, well I'm working on some opinion data with the voting thread, but I don't have enough votes on there yet to make me feel comfortable using the data in a convincing proposal.

Well I have adjusted my sig so the poll gets maximum exposure. Feel free to bump my congrats post for the new folders I hate to clutter this stickey any more :x

Anyways I thought I would share some specs from my farm

SSE and a 45% clock boost took it from about 3:15 a frame to 1:16 not bad for a proc I paid less than a $1.00 for 8)

Just checked another folding p2107_lambda_5way_melt_4_10011 Gromacs for 404 points.
500 Celery 5:45 a frame
733 Celery 1:35 a frame
Gotta love SSE!

Good Job spreading the word around.

SSE does really help speed things up.

One of my rigs is 98% done with a double gromacs 1112 point WU! Can't wait. Plus one of my other rigs has the same type of WU for 1112 points, but it's only 8% done. I've been blessed with big WUs lately!

I've been spying in some of the other forums. It looks like there was a bit of a drought in WU's last month. Stanford released a ton of high point DRGromacs. Most teams stats show a large point slump then a bump, very similar to ours

BTW the new switch is in, and I'm running a test b0rge on one of the terminals at work. If all goes well, I'll be giving you a run for your money soon 8)

Yeah I know, you have a lot more physical machines. We'll have to see how good it works.

Numbers vs High Power

Well when you can't afford a quad xenon proc server you have to deal with large numbers, course its easier to just add 5 $50 clients whenyou can as opposed to a $5000 server hehe 😛

Ok here's an idea  . How about we round up $1000 and have someone write us a trojan that makes peoples computers fold for THG. LOL
Article here

We'd be in the top 10 in no time. I bet most people would never know they were folding.
