i just replace my gt220 to PowerColor HD6950 1gb ddr5. Yesterday my pc start and running in window but on top of screen writing TESTVBIOS but i change back to gt220 it work fine.i change back to HD6950 and it run same again TESTVBIOS and then i go to screen resolution, advanced i saw my pc running on 256mb graphic card.at BIOS INFORMATION it write CAYMAN which is my HD6950 model. So, today i try to boot my pc and my pc start acting weird which all fan is running.Usually my pc got beeps sound starting to window. But now it just all fan spinning and keep black screen.its also keep restart itself.i try change my graphic card to 9500GT which my Pentium 4 use now and its out same result with pc wont start and keep restarting itself.is

I hope someone have solution for this problem.

Solution
hello,

if youre still at this problem, you might wanna try what I did.
my gc is powercolor hd6950 1gb ddr5 with dual BIOS switch bought from ipmart.

the gc was good except that it has the same TESTVBIOS displayed at the top center of the screen - yes it was annoying.
the gc then made my pc hanged in the middle of the game displaying white vertical lines.

what I did was flashed the gc with its original stock BIOS - you need to get the ATIWinFlash and PowerColor HD6950 1Gb DDR5 BIOS

select 1 or 2 from the BIOS switch on your card. actually the switch was made for OC convenience, so the choice is yours.

boot into windows and run ATIWinFlash. from there, find the intended BIOS and flash your card. the flash process...

The first bios is DETECTING IDE and in that bios writing what my processor and my motherboard.
The second bios is Verifying pool data.
the massage start on verifying pool data bios. Its continue to windows load and then until fully windows load it also displaying TESTVBIOS. That mean It wont disappear until I shut down my pc with no picture in screen(FULLY SHUT DOWN).

4.How long to windows load? Its around 10 second
5.On the windows logon? Its appear and the word of TESTVBIOS become small because I running 1920x1080 resolution
6.On the windows desktop? Its appear until I fully shut down my pc(No power is running on my pc or my monitor goes black because of pc shut down)

I think the question 1-3 is answered at my first answer.

Sometimes it just take around 6 second to windows load (I mean this by sometimes I just see 0.5-1 second at Verifying pool data bios which mean I just see the bios and not seeing the fully verifying pool data bios. This happen when I shut down and I open back in instant).MAYBE LESS THAN 6 SECOND FROM FIRST DETECTIONG IDE DRIVES BIOS TO WINDOWS LOAD.

If I understand correctly, the TESTVBIOS message appears on screen after the BIOS post (verifying pool data) has finished and passed, next the screen turns black for a few seconds, next Windows starts loading, and 10 seconds into the Windows load, the TESTVBIOS message appears on the screen, and stays on untill you shut the computer completely off... Am I right?..

The last part is all about the BIOS when the TESTVBIOS message still has not appeared on screen... right?

If I understand you correctly: The TESTVBIOS message would be from Windows, nothing to do with the BIOS, and your question about formatting and Installing Windows clean, is yes, a format is most likely to resolve the issue.

its not happen after bios verifying pool data finished. it happen when it on verifying pool data bios (haven't passed or finished). Its just come out when it on verifying pool data bios turn until I fully shut down my pc.

and you say the last part. Its always show TESTVBIOS massage on verifying pool data no matter how fast pc load it will show it up. The point that I get. it started to show on the second bios that is I know as verifying pool data bios.
(started showing when it on verifying pool data bios that not finished or passed). Its just showing in time when on verifying pool data bios turn.

In that case, you need to check the BIOS, in Video settings...
1. look for something related to the video card and configure it as necessary.
2. Another option is to enable the BIOS failproof settings,
3. and another option is to reset the BIOS to erase wrong settings set by the user.
4. If all fails, try updating the BIOS.

I already remove the battery.
I checked my bios version is up to date(newest version).

I tried both use last known good and default. Its still same nothing different.

I also tried change back to my old card Gigabyte GT220 1GB DDR3 and it look my my pc wont start. It will turn up all fan will spin but there is blank and after around 1-2min it will turn off itself and I change back to HD6950 it will work fine but still got massage TESTVBIOS. I check my newest BIOS at 2009 same at GIGABYTE sites. I also tried uninstall driver and there no change .can it causes by old MOTHERBOARD around 5-6 years ago does not support new card December 2011? Or it maybe some corrupted data on my windows( I mean this by my windows shocked after he detect new GPU). Or my motherboard is too old and almost dead? I don't think my PSU is causes this because I just bought it(Have not reached 1 month yet).My PSU also does not show any symtoms that it wont start except put my old GPU GT220. What should I do now? I have no idea already.

OK, one card has trouble and the other doesn't turn on... sounds to me like the PCIe slot is the cause... you don't have onboard video, so try a different video card, preferably a inexpensive PCI video card... if the problem is the PCIe slot, it should a PCI card should run without issues.

EDITED
There is a possibility the Video card is not compatible with the PCIe socket... I read something of the sort but can't remember the details... is was something like ATI/AMD 2.1 cards not being compatible with 1.1 PCIe slots... Nvidia being fully compatible. I'm not sure if all that is correct I don't remeber exactly but will look for details and update this information.

If it were a Windows issue, it would start when Windows loads, and not before.

Motherboard being to old (and almost dead PCIe socket) is a possibility that would be confirmed or cleared with a PCI video card.

Your card?

Your motherboard?
GIGABYTE GA-P31-ES3G LGA 775 Intel P31 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128356

Expansion Slots:
PCI Express x16 1 slot
PCI Express x1 3 slots
PCI Slots 3 slots

It doesn't fully describe the PCIe Slot, but according to the year of manufacture it must be pre-2.1 and there are incompatibilities with PCIe 1.1 slot and 2.1 ATI cards... read the detailed information.

So, you think my PowerColor HD6950 is not faulty? How to know if the card is faulty?

I do some research and someone say if the card is faulty it wont start or black screen because DVI or VGA cable cannot detect the card. Second, If the card is faulty it should be artifacts in game. In my case, I don't have any artifacts problem and I already try both DVI port on my HD6950 GPU and both of the DVI port wfine. orks But my FPS wont get stable(maybe because of bottleneck Core 2 Duo E7400,Im not sure about this). What do you think? Does it maybe cause of faulty card? TESTVBIOS is the only one still the issues.

If the card is new, it's possible but not likely. If you read "The final answer to the controversial PCIe x16 version compatibility", which states that that PCIe 1.1 motherboard socket is incompatible with PCIe 2.1 video cards... I haven't determined which PCIe x16 socket your motherboard has but it was probably manufactured between 2006 and 2008 when PCIe x16 2.1 was not around, so it must be 1.0 and most likely incompatible with your Powercolor HD 6950 PCIe x16 2.1.

The article says the PCIe x16 1.1 socket and PCIe x16 2.1 cards run at different voltage... and that is probably what causes the issues, the card is not so fast that it would bottleneck with the Core 2 Duo E7400. So, to be sure of this, we need to know the full motherboard sockeet specifications... the information on the Gigabyte product page and the Newegg description just say the socket is PCI-E x16 but nothing more, but I would bet it's 1.0/1.0a.

Read the wikipedia info. It says ATI PCIe x16 socket 1.0/1.0a are incompatible with 2.1 cards, and 1.1 sockets are compatible with a BIOS update, but you already have the latest BIOS update... so the socket must be 1.0/1.0a

I want to make it clear that incompatibility doesn't necessarily mean it would not boot... but that it would not work perfectly, and also it's not with all cards and sockets. Nvidias are fully compatible, and some Motherboards are not compatible with ATI 1.0/1.0a. Your's would be working perfectly if it were fully compatible... that's if it's new, a used card would be unpredictable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.1
you or I have to read the full motherboard specifications on the PCIe x 16 socket.

I check it with GPU-Z that he write Bus Interface: PCI-E 1.1 x16 @ x16 1.1.

Why not PCI-E 1.1 x16@ x16 2.1? because If im not mitaken when I using GT220 DDR3 it writed as PCI-E 1x1 x16@ x16 2.0

Socket PCIe x16 1.1 needs a BIOS update to run a Radeon PCIe x16 2.1 or 3.0 card
Socket PCIe x16 1.0/1.0a/1.1/2.0/2.1/3.0 are fully compatible with all Nvidia cards

If you read the complete article it says Radeon PCIe x16 2.1 cards were upgraded to use less power and Nvidia cards remained using the same... So, the incompatibility is only with Radeon 2.1> cards, not Radeon 2.0 or Nvidia... Nvidias retain full compatibility. Detailed information specifically on voltages should be available if you have the time to search for it...

Fully detailed:
Compatibility:
Motherboard Slot PCIe x16 1.0/1.0a/1.1/2.0 with Radeon PCIe x16 2.0 cards
Motherboard Slot PCIe x16 1.1 with Radeon PCIe x16 2.1 & 3.0 cards with a BIOS update.
Motherboard Slot PCIe x16 1.0/1.0a/1.1/2.0 fully compatible with all Nvidia cards

Incompatibility:
Motherboard Slot PCIe x16 1.0/1.0a with Radeon PCIe x16 2.1 & 3.0 cards
Motherboard Slot PCIe x16 1.1/2.0 with Radeon PCIe x16 2.1 & 3.0 without a BIOS update

So, I need to effort for new MOBO,PROCESSOR,RAM but now I have a very low budget(im just kid no money and need to save pocket money)

So planning this build(does it ok)?

PROCESSOR : http://www.lelong.com.my/intel-pentium-g3220-3-00ghz-socket-1150-processor-chocobozz-I1544272-2007-01-Sale-I.htm

MOTHERBOARD: http://www.lelong.com.my/asrock-b85m-hds-socket-1150-motherboard-chocobozz-I1509743-2007-01-Sale-I.htm

RAM: http://www.lelong.com.my/corsair-vengeance-4gb-ddr3-1600mhz-memory-kit-cmz4gx3m1a1600c9-blk-chocobozz-I1001961-2007-01-Sale-I.htm

Yes... the upgrade build components are fully compatible.

There is still a slight possibility that adjusting a BIOS setting may help... that's if your BIOS has power settings for the video card, try reducing the voltage for the PCIe Card. We need to research the power ussage for PCIe x16 2.1 cards, and also what the PCIe x16 1.1/2.0 slot supplies, once both voltages are determined, try adjusting the PCIe x16 slot voltage.... Voltage is the only compatibility difference between Radeon 1.0 though 2.0 and 2.1 to 3.0 and adjusting it may just work.

EDIT:
Also try to find a more recent BIOS update... the information clearly states that 2.1 cards should work in 1.1 slots with a BIOS update, if your's does not run appropriately, the BIOS you have may not be the latest or it may not be configured appropriately.

It also looks like your card is supplied by the PSU, so further research may be necessary to know what can be done, or even if the suggested BIOS tweak is useless.

since I think I don't waste money for buying Pentium G3220 and change it later. I think I want to go within this 2 build. which you should recommend for GAMING?

INTEL BUILD:
Core i3 4130
Asrock Motherboard Intel Socket1150 H81M-VG4
Kingston Ram Desktop DDR3 Hyper-X Fury 1X 4GB PC1600

AMD BUILD:
AMD FX4300
Asrock Motherboard AMD AM3+ 960GC-GSFX
Kingston Ram Desktop DDR3 Hyper-X Fury 1X 4GB PC1600

All this I combined with Corsair VS550 550 watt. Will I have any problem with this? I also buy cheapest motherboard since I don't have high budget. Just at for gaming medium-high no OC. I confuse to choose AMD 4 core or Intel i3 2 Core? I see at hwcompare say i3 much faster but its only 2 core. Which is the better choice between this 2. Don't recommend me other processor because that only I effort it. If you know cheaper processor please tell me but If you say AMD ATHLON 760k(NOT FOR SALE IN MY COUNTRY). I really appreciate because you help me so much already.

.

Between the i3-4130 and the FX-4300, the Inel i3 would be my choice... you can see the numbers below.
Your PSU should handle the build with any of these CPUs, except that the gaming fps will have to be low-to-medium, lower than you want, but it's because you would need more than 4GB of RAM and a faster CPU. If you have to make every Ringgit count, my suggestion would be to save the amount you want to spend on the DDR3 RAM module, and spend part of it on a better CPU. The FX-6300 is about the same price as the i3, and you can use your DDR2 RAM along with it on the Asrock 960GC-GSFX motherboard (it can use DDR2 or DDR3 RAM).

About your doubts on the 4 core FX against the 2 core i3, that is because the Intel is said to be more efficient than the AMD cpu, and the benchmark CPU mark seems to prove it. As for a cheaper CPU, there are many but none are faster, more efficient or more available than these 4 I listed below.

First column of numbers (CPU Mark) is the mark reached in the Passmark benchmarks
Second column is the rank, based on performance to price
Third column is the latest average price within the USA.

  • Intel Pentium G3220 @ 3.00Ghz...3188 569 $56.99
    AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core..............4714 337 $87.99
    Intel Core i3-4130 @ 3.40GHz......4805 322 $109.99
    AMD FX-6300 Six-Core..................6355 223 $109.32
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I don't think AMD FX4300 or AMD FX6300 can support DDR2 RAM because I found this

*DDR3 and DDR2 are supported separately.

**DDR3 memory is only supported by installing AM3/AM3+ CPU.

***Due to the operating system limitation, the actual memory size may be less than 4GB for the reservation for system usage under Windows® 32-bit OS. For Windows® 64-bit OS with 64-bit CPU, there is no such limitation.

****DDR2 memory is only supported by installing AM2/AM2+/AM3 CPU.

*****Support with AM3 / AM2+ CPU

you can see it at MEMORY column http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/960GC-GS%20FX/?cat=Specifications

*DDR3 and DDR2 are supported separately.

Means they can not be used together. it's either DDR2 or DDR3 but not both at the same time. Of course DDR2 would have to be used with AM2/AM2+/AM3 CPU.

**DDR3 memory is only supported by installing AM3/AM3+ CPU.
Right!... I forgot that... I was thinking of what I read time ago that next generation CPUs had support for the RAM they are supposed to work with and also with the previous generation of RAM, and that also had to be supported by the Chipset. And AM3+ is two generations ahead, so it will probably not work.

I think im going for i3 because I see on youtube i3 have more FPS even 2 core. I let you know when I change my PC to i3 or FX4300 but not in this month maybe 3-4 month or could be canceled due to low budget. Thanks you helped me so much.

Let me guess, you brought the PowerColor Hd 6950 1gb ddr5 from ipmart.com.my(malaysian branch) is that right?
http://www.ipmart.com.my/main/product/PowerColor_HD6950_1GB_GDDD5_Bulk_Packaging_PowerColor_Warranty_439085.php?prod=439085

i bought 2 of them, the first one quite a while ago, i rma-ed it because it keeps crashing and the testvbios thingy also appears, 7months later they sent it back and and during the time in between i bought the same one again hoping i could crossfire them, tested both of them, testvbios still appears but works the card works fine, got used to them now. Guess i won't be buying from them again.

ya, I buy from ipmart. and I do a lot of testing which include driver , reseting bios, stress test(may causes by faulty card but not).I get the TESTVBIOS disappear when I uninstall AMD CATALYST and when the screen refreshed when I restart TESTVBIOS appear back.then I install AMD CATALYST back and then the screen refreshed during installation and the TESTVBIOS disappear again and samething happen when I restart it appear again. I bought it haven't a month I planning to get refund because of this suck product. Never Satisfied with this product. Since I from Malaysia so it would be easily to get refund.

Anyway really thanks you because you solved my problem and it not because of my old PC I guess. Anyway, What is your spec? if you can crossfire I think you have decent motherboard right?

In the same time you think I should refund it because the bad product?

You can try , I'll just continue using them. At this stage, I just don't really care about it anymore, I will probably change it next year anyway. Both of us getting the same problem with the same card (1 of yours and 2 of mine) kind of automatically pin the fault on the card themselves so i guess you should change them(rma them or whatever) if you're planning on using them for quite a while.

My pc specs:
Aerocool Templarius Imperator 750watt
M5A99X EVO R2.0 MOBO
AMD Fx 8350
8GB Kingston ddr3
Radeon Hd 6950 1GB DDR5 crossfirex (with slight disability like yours)
1TB seagate barracuda

you have really decent PC. if you ram-ed then I should not do that already. I should get refund from them since I have 10 days more before my card reach 1 month. After refund I think I would buy new GPU from other store(not from them anymore). So, I want to ask you which better for my current CPU im using now for the new gpu if bottleneck I don't care about bottleneck because I currently have bottleneck from HD6950 and I don't feel anything weird except the TESTVBIOS. I want to buy Gigabyte R9 280 3GB DDR5 or R9 270x 2GB DDR5 I confuse about which one to get for my Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHZ(if need to OC I will OC it). What card do you suggest me if you think both card not running better than if I put R7 265.

Unfortunately, i'm not adept at recommending you Graphics Cards, I'm not familliar with the performance of the core 2 duo so I'm afraid you will need to do some research yourself. This link should help a little, apparently your cpu is quite aged.

the TESTVBIOS should be gone after that.
so far my gc works great without glitch.
I hope this will work for you as it did on my gc.

additional info, I tried flashing the card on the other BIOS to unlock to HD6970 but no success. from the BIOS bank, I couldn't find any HD6970 with 1Gb memory. no worry, the gc works great with the stock BIOS.

thanks it really work.
