You're missing the point.
While I agree that the PSU is in fact one of the most future proof components(Case would be #1 imo) the fact is, as we progress into smaller and smaller die size(I'm sure thats not the right term but I'm tired e.g. 45nm, 32nm, 22nm, 14nm etc) the power consumption goes down.
The same can be said for GPUs. AMD/ATi/Radeon specifically has made vast improvements in idle and maximum power consumption just in the last 4 years. So in actuallity current high-end/mainstream hardware actually uses less wattage than comparable hardware from 2008.
If you have an issue with "dirty power" I would've recommended a 80 PLUS SILVER or better rating, and a battery backup like one of these:
Hooray power!
I am currently running a 5970 and 5870 on a Seasonic 750W 80 PLUS GOLD and I have no power issues.
Also HDDs use very little power. In order to utilize the power of your 1000W PSU in HDDs it would take over 60 HDDs. Also as far as future proofing for HDDs? As platter densities get better, we are getting more TB per drive. Therefore, less power needed. This of course isn't including SSDs, which use like 1 or 2 watts.
So while the counter argument was phrased in a douche like manner by someone else, it's still a valid counter argument. But being overzealous with a quality PSU is certainly better than being at the other end of the spectrum!
