The most fun I had was with Civ 4, playing as India. My absolute favorite thing was flipping cities with culture and conquering a continent without declaring war.

Has to be civ 2 for me as it was the first one i played. I would play any science based race and sprint to nukes so and then launch them all and watch the world burn lol. Good times...

For me it was the first game in the series.
An all fresh concept that I had to master quickly. I didn't have a computer at home, but played the game occasionally when visiting a friend trying to get the most out of a few shorter sessions.

I always really enjoyed the Alpha Centauri version of Civ. Had such a great tech tree and diverse win conditions, with a Sci-Fi angle that I really enjoyed.

My favorite was, is and probably will be, Civilization, the first and original. It was such a milestone for gaming. Strictly speaking, the later civs are better, but the first one was a massive step forward.

For me the best Civ experience was Sid Meier's Civilization II, due to amount of nostalgia. It was such a thrill to play it at the time of release it gives me chills when I think about it now.

I've spend many hours into Civ V, for some reason my favorite part of starting Civ games is the first 50 turns or so, since thats when you and AI trying to get upper hand in exploration, wonders, city / border expansion.

..and yes, I am looking forward to play Civ VI!

As pleb as it may seem, I had the most fun playing Civilization: Revolution, on the Xbox 360. This was mostly because I had friends who also had the game so we played together, but it was fun none the less. On the other hand, my best individual playing experience is definitely with Civ V.

Civilization: Call to Power. It was the first commercial game I played on Linux (running Corel Linux at the time). The port was done great and gave hope that Linux gaming might someday become a reality.

I still remember nuking my enemies, focusing on Communistic government to be able to build troops, outrunning everyone with the building of wonders, and blasting the heck out of civilizations way less advanced than myself... lol. Usually I'd end up winning the game by completing the alien project since trying to completely wipe out my enemies ended up creating constant rebellions in my own empire.

Civilization 5 was my favorite because it was the first civilization that I really explored all the mods and gameplay/balance enhancements with with fixed a lot of the issues with the base game. The expansions did make the game feel a lot more complete and reduced the need for modes though. Also the one unit per tile change was great imo since it introduced a need for better strategy (vs humans anyways, too bad the ai was terrible at combat in civ v)

Civilization III was the first one I played and it got me hooked. I remember it well because back then I was working a lot so I barely ever had time to play it so I'd do an hour whenever I could and that made the game last a long time for me. :)

I really love Civ IV as it was the first in the series that I owned. I played it while at Uni but it got lost after I lent it to a mate on the dormitory.

I recently bought it again when it was on sale at Amazon. Love the fact that I could activate it on Steam.

As for favourite civilization? I would have to say Inca with Huayna Capac. Early agriculture plus the culture that one can gain from Terrace is amazing, and after upgrading warrior to Quechua the Inca have a power spike that allows for early aggression.

My favorite Civ was Civ IV, but Civ V is a very close second. But once the DLC's were put in, it made it feel more like IV but with extra toys and pretty UI.

Civ IV was a true pioneer in the series with all of the new features and improvements from the previous versions, and it was just beautiful and so much fun to play because it was extremely challenging, along with the balancing act you always had perform to keep your production high and people happy. The espionage was so awesome, too! Also, being able to convert enemy cities with your Culture was an awesome roundabout way to completely wipe out your enemies without going to war. Not only that but it allowed you to avoid angering other Civs by not being a warmonger, all the while the person you're taking over ends up getting the hostilities from other Civs because they end up being the aggressor towards you, and all you have to do is defend yourself.

It also had great modding capabilities and really opened that up going forward, with heavy emphasis on variety, openness, and unique gameplay strategies.

I've probably put about 300 hours into each one easily.

Of all the civ-related games, I enjoyed Alpha Centauri the most. Not because of the particular game mechanics, but in what space fiction added to the game. It was like Civ with a coherent fictional narrative, plausible future tech, and unit design. I usually played as the Cybernetics, mostly for ethical self-consistency.

The original one for me too, one of the first games I played on my dad's pc... It gave me the fever, the civ fever. 😀

The new one looks interesting as well, seems this time around they have included most of the mechanics into the launch version, so no religion DLCs etc..

edit
cant remember which nation I played the most back then, I tend to try out them all. Really liked the Indians in civ5 because of their different city&pop unhappiness penalty.

I have only played Civ III on up, except for Civ VI of course, and after each has been updated with the DLCs the newest version has been my favorite each time. They do a great job of updating the game and keeping it interesting!
