Civilization V was my first Civ and has been the only one I've played unti VI, despite having picked up III and IV in bundle somewhere.
If I win another copy it's going to my girlfriend who has been eager to try it.
So far I think I like VI best due to its new district system which has revoluntionized the way I look at and consider the map.

I've played all of them, but I enjoyed Civ 2 the best. I was able to customize the files and make the game more challenging, fun, and interesting. Probably played that game for like 10 years....

Massive heresy coming up: For me, it's likely Civilization: Beyond Earth. I know it's simpler in most ways. I know it didn't have as many expansions. I know it suffered more asymmetry than other entrants. But it was one of the more fun ones to replay compared to the "core" Civilization games. Once I'd done a few good runs of Civilization V, basically every other playthrough felt almost identical. Beyond Earth was very different depending on how you grew your ideology, and the different aesthetics always made it very interesting to play around with.

I know it's sacrilege to say, but Call to Power II was my favorite. I loved the videos, the tech tree and the ability to play into the future.

Probably played as Germans or Americans most of the time for no real reason. Just the ones I landed on.

As far as legit Civ games go, Civ III was where it was at.

Civ 4: Beyond The Sword, hands down! Playing as George Washington and leading America through the history in a non-violent way was never more fun. :) Atleast until somebody decided to invade, then the tables would turn. The revamped combat was very good and fun, with siege weapons to counter those boring super stacks of enemy units. If they didn't spread out their units they would potentially regret it. Also, the culture and espionage, and the personal favorite of random events occurring, together with the overall polish of the game made it an intriguing experience to play every time.

Let me see... I've played the first, and the second, Plus a little of the second one's Test of Time version, and played a little of 4. I don't remember the third one, and done little with fifth one as most people I had noted comments about liking the 4th much more because of less hand-holding from the game.

I have to lean towards the second one Civilization II (Gold Edition) as that one was a big improvement over the first, plus I understood its mechanics pretty well. It was a fun game that was the first in the series to use video clips for the interaction with the NPC rulers of the other kingdoms/civilizations. Its gameplay could be really tough at times, although it was funny to watch a unit just "bounce" between two cells (pathfinding issues I believe) and sometimes that could be a relief when you was trying to rebuild defenses from a recent attack. Raiding hoards were also an interesting touch to the game, especially when they had a chance to start a civilization too by taking over a city.

EDIT: clarification of version: Civ 2: Test of Time.

EDIT2:
As to which civilization within Civilization (as some are answering as too) I'm not sure. I haven't played much of the newer versions, but I can say I like the customized civilization option. You can choose a civ that doesn't exist in the game (real or imaginary.) Add that to a custom leader name, and you can have any civilization you can imagine in the game, albeit limited to the graphics and development tree(s) that are in game.

Out of all the Civilization games, what was your favorite civilization to play, and why?

If your question is asking about my favorite Civ series game so far, then that is Civ V, because of the big shift to one unit per tile mechanics and how that changed warfare strategies regarding unit types and terrain. It fixed the whole doomstacks problem that plagued vanilla IV. If your question is instead about my favorite civ/leader to play, then that is America/Washington from Civ V because of the sight range bonus, which is a huge boost to early game scouting and getting those goodie huts first.

Civ IV was definitely my favorite, because of giant stacks of units. Playing as Bismarck with a stack of Panzers just waiting to infiltrate enemy cities. This Civ felt like a Risk game and every turn was worth the wait. Just one more turn.

Civ 3 was my favorite because it was the first civ game i ever played. I was in college and I played as Rome, and i remember staying up all night playing on my laptop, I was hooked, one more turn. I remember the roads, and the unit stacks lol. Those were the days when i could stay up all night playing civ. Now as i am older i just go to bed at a normal hour. I miss the youthful days, when i was so excited to play into the night. Just fyi i did not make it through that year of college. I blame Civilization 3 and Warcraft 3.

If you meant favorite civilization it would have to be Egypt. I love ancient Egyptian history even my name on here is an Egyptian pharaoh. So getting to play as the civilization is pretty fun. Thebes, Memphis, ahh love it.

Honestly, Civ 6 will be my first Civ game.

English is not my primary language, the deep emotional connections found with the mother tongue often got lost in translations. That being said, I went to a friend house last weekend and he was playing Civ 6 in Chinese language. The translation was extremely well done and I was highly impressed by the amount of work Firaxis put in to make it happen. The game itself felt like a story book/movie and I planning on merge myself into it soon :)

For me it is Civilization 5. I haven't played earlier ones but Civ5 got me hooked to it and I look forward to playing this.

Civ 1 was the first game that I stayed up all night playing and had to call in sick to work! 20 years later, I scheduled my vacation to start on 11-11-11 when Skyrim was released 🙂

It would have to be Civ 4. I believe I sunk more enjoyable time into that game than any other video game out there, often playing incredibly long, multi session games with friends.

Civilization Beyond Earth was my favorite. After the brilliance that was Alpha Centauri, I really wanted a scifi 4X in that line, with the tile by tile play of a civ game but the scope of a master of orion. A lot of people didn't like BE but I loved it.

Does alpha Centauri qualifies as Civilization game? sure it should. it was civilization...IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE! with a bunch of new mechanics. loved the diplomacy, the new "blind" research. great. i wish there were more Alpha Centauris.

Civ 5 is my favorite because it's the civ game I started with, and I really like the look and feel of the game, and how addictive it is!

As I have never played a game of Civilization in my life, I can't attest to which one is the best. However, I have read alot about Civ VI, and I am very excited about this game. This will definitely be my entry into the Civilization series!

After playing hundreds of hours of Civ V, I am excited to see the new game. It makes me recall a lot of memories of "just one more turn" and my cousin winning by going Venice and buying all the spaceship parts on a way to a scientific victory. I still pick Rome as my fav Civ every time to this day.

Civ 5 was my fave because of the change from squares to hexes, which made much more sense as a grand strategy game with diagonal distances being just as relevant as cardinal directions. Aesthetically it also made the map and the landscape look more natural.

Another voice to the Civ 2 crowd.. Civ 5 is good, too, but (to me anyway) it seemed like they lost their way a little on 3 & 4.

I've been hearing that 6 is pretty good.

Just due to sentimental value, I have to say that Civ Rev is my favorite. This game was the first Civ game that I played and it has a lot of memories tied to it, like finding my first wonder ever, which was the fountain of life!

For which game is my favorite, hard to pick between Civ II and III, but I think I will have to go with III because of the introduction of multiplayer. When my wife and I first started dating I introduced her to the world of strategy gaming (her previous video game experience kinda peaked with Aladdin on Sega Genesis)) and she turned out to be a natural at world domination. She, my room mates at the time, and I would spend entire nights playing Civ III.

For which actual Civilization that was easily the Ottoman Empire in Civ III. The combination of being industrious, so workers built things faster, and scientific, starting with Bronze Working, let me rush to Iron Working quite quickly. Then i could start pumping out Swordsmen when most other Civs were still fielding club wielding warriors. Made it very easy for me to stake out and defend my territory in the early game.

My favorite civ is England from Civ 5 because of the extra naval movement bonus, really makes having a spread out sea empire possible, and synergizes with scouting and settling on isolated areas. Really powerful on archipelago maps.

Civ4 was the best because it had a lot of depth and great balance. The expansion packs really added a lot to the game to flesh it out and gave the player a lot of choices. The graphics were also very good.
