hi, I am building my new PC after many years but I would like to know if I can move my whole installation of windows to this new PC (of course I don't care if windows get deactivated) I also know that I can just do a clean installation but I have a lot of unused software, old games and their saves mods scattered in my old system and would take weeks to transfer all of them into my new system, some of them might be unavailable for redownloading (probable mods)

Solution
I would like to know if I can move my whole installation of windows to this new PC
Generally no.

Especially if: "I am building my new PC after many years"

Doing this, there are 3 possible outcomes:
  1. It works just fine
  2. It fails completely
  3. It "works", but you're chasing issues for weeks/months.
I've seen all 3. We get this question here daily, and #3 is becoming more prevalent.
And the greater disparity of the 2 systems, #2 becomes more likely.

With a new motherboard, a fresh install is always recommended, usually required.
