Hey guys I am trying to pick a graphics card for my new comp. Im curious if I should wait and get a 5870 or 5850? Or should I just go with a 4890? This is a build for Christmas and for my little brother. He will be playing games mostly on it.

Power supply will be corsair 850w. Processor will be 920. He will play just about everything but want to make sure that it will play on highest settings, he will play a lot of FPS. Screen we are not sure yet we are still picking but we are shooting for the best.

You will have an x58 motherboard, capable of Crossfire.

If your budget permits, an HD5970 will be an absolute monster of a card, and will ba available soon. I think it's around $600, though.

We'll need a more specific budget, please.

$200 HD4890
$300 HD5850
$400 HD5870
$500 HD5850 crossfire
$600 HD5970

Either HD 5850 or HD 5870 will suffice for 1920 x 1200. But if he's getting a monitor with 2560 x 1600 resolution, then get the HD 5870.

The HD 4890 is still good for 1920 x 1200. I think prices are starting to increase due to shrinking supply.

Make your decision quick, and if you are gonna buy a HD 58xx then check websites often. It only took me 8 days to find and buy one; checking about every two hours if I was online. There are people have been looking for a HD 58xx for over 4 weeks.
