Hi,

You will be able to see the type of the file only if it is associated with any application in your computer. You can identify the type of the file by seeing the icon of the file. For eg. if the file is a word doc then you will see a blue icon with a letter W in it or the file extension will be .doc.

The other way to see the file type is to disable the option "Hide file extensions for well known file types". Then every file displays the file extension after the dot.
