Question Upgrade advice - should I upgrade to an i7-6700 and a 1050 Ti ?

Hi All,

I'm pretty technically savvy but have never upgrade my PC. My current specs are:

CPU - i5-6400
GPU - AMD RX-460
Ram - 16gb
MB - ASUS 110m-R

I am looking to upgrade to i7-6700 and 1050 Ti (I know these aren't the newest but I have budget restraints)

Is this a good idea and do I need to take into any other considerations such as PSU or bottlenecking ?
I've done a bit of research and this all seems fine but just wanted another opinion.

That wouldn't be much of an upgrade.

At 1080p the 1050 ti isn't a vast upgrade over what you have. What's your budget?

that is an upgrade, yes. But not much.

1050ti is priced similarly to a 1650. I suggest getting a 1650 instead if you are short on budget.
1650 should give you better performance. Try to find the GDDR6 version.

hmm, I own both an MSI 1050ti and an Asus 1650 GDDR6, so I gave you advice.


but on processor.. I don't have those. So cannot comment. But I think you're good already. My 1050ti is paired only with an i7-2600k, and it breezed through most ps4 games I played with it.

It plays most games absolutely fine, e.g. Valorant but when attempting a larger game such as Fortnite it struggles so much. Haven't experimented with any other games as I have only recently gotten back into PC games (been on Series X for a while) so thought an upgrade might allow me to play bigger games like EFT

The 6400 was a 3-legged handicapped dog of a cpu. Sorry. The 6700 is a decent upgrade in ability, even if for nothing else but sheer clock speeds, but also includes thread count, which is important when dealing with quad core cpus and today's games, and includes larger Lcache which is also important.

Some games will not really gain fps much, most will. All the games will smooth out depending on if they are more optimized for cores or clock speeds or Lcache use. Your gaming experience will improve even if the fps counter barely nudges.

The 1050ti is almost double the ability of the Rx460 although that doesn't necessarily translate to games. You'll mostly be looking at a possible 20% gain in onscreen fps, if the cpu can do that, but that's just an average, with some games hitting 50%, some closer to 5% gains.

It's a healthy jump in possibility.

And you butcher performance, as the 5500 is PCI-E gen 3. The R5 5500 is a 5600g without the IGP. This low of a budget, to properly utilize the 6500xt, you really need gen 4, and this is the cheapest way to do it, that doesn't involve getting a terrible H610 or B660 board.

I didn't realise it didn't support PCI-E 4.0. In that case I much prefer your build. I did think of an Alder Lake i3 but couldn't see a decent board that fit the budget. That's a very nice board at that price, if it was my money then I would do exactly what you have above.

The point I was trying to make though was, by the time you've upgraded CPU's on an old platform, you'll be so close to the price of a newer one you might as well have the extra longevity.

IMHO, not worth the time or effort, as you will only see very minimal improvements over your existing system....

If however, you can stretch your budget a bit to get an i7-7xxx cpu & perhaps a GTX 1660, then you would notice an overall performance uplift, although it still won't be a night & day difference...

A 1660 would be a night and day difference, in gaming, over their current GPU, even with an i7 6700. The only way I would say get the i7, is if it were really cheap.

This is a bit over budget but would be an even better upgrade, over my previous recommendation.
