Upgrade consideration

Ok, I'm currently on -

Athlon XP 2400+
ECS K7S5A Mobo
1Gig PC2100 RAM
ATI 9800XT
Audigy 1

Considering upgrading to -

Athlon 64 3500+
Abit AV8
1 Gig PC3200 RAM

I'm playing games like Half Life 2 & Vampire Bloodlines.

Price isn't a massive issue, just wondering what kind of boost I'd see,
would it be significant? Would my graphics card become a bit of a bottle
neck or is it still gonna be up to scratch? Is my CPU holding back my
graphics card at the moment?

And before someone just gives me a link to Anandtech I've looked at
benchmarks and the numbers look good, just wondering if anyone has made a
similar upgrade maybe :)

Thanks!

I know the wheels go round and round, but whats the story prior to that
movement?

I'd do it, you deserve it! :)

an ATI 9800XT is no bottleneck mate very nice graphics card! :)
Personally I don't see how upgrading to your proposed setup would make any
significant difference to your gaming experience.

It's not so much your CPU as your motherboard. For example, on the computer
I've got HL2 installed on, I'm limited to PC2100 and AGP4x (I've effectively
got a 9800XT) which is probably what your motherboard is as well, with a
barton at 2.2GHz (well, two of them actually :) ). I can't use high model
details or texture levels without a severe framerate hit, but I get
essentialy no difference in frame rate going from no ansio, no AA to 16x
ansio, 4x AA. A strong sign of an underpowered system behind the graphics
card :) People with a similar CPU and GPU but with PC3200 RAM (ie: 200MHz
FSB) can run at high texture and model settings without any problems.

The system you would be upgrading to would give you a significant boost in
what you could crank the settings up to. If you dropped a mobile XP into
there and OC'd it to the max you probably wouldn't get much of a boost. But
changing to the proposed A64 setup would give you a significant boost. It's
got faster RAM (and the on-die controller), a faster FSB-equivalent, and
AGP8x, as well as the faster CPU. You could probably run HL2 with all the
settings to max.
