I recently bought a new GPU, the RTX 2060, and I am experiencing some bottlenecking with my i5 8400. Considering upgrading to an i5 9600k, do you think that is a good idea or just a waste of money?

Probably more of a waste than anything.. Do you even have a Z-motherboard to take advantage of overclocking?

You shouldn't see much bottlenecking if any at all. What game and at what resolution/refresh rate are you playing?

Please list full system specs including power supply and monitor.

Have you checked temps?

How are you determining a "bottleneck"? What resolution? What games? What in-game settings? What refresh rate?

Please post your full system specs.

Ultimately, both chips are 6c/6t parts. The 9600K is a good margin faster in clock-speed, but if you're being "bottlenecked", it's more likely to be from a core count than it is from strictly clock speed.
Also, a 9600K will require an aftermarket cooler and (preferrably) a Z series motherboard. Increasing the cost substantially. For the likely minor gains, it would be a pretty big waste of money.

I'm also curious to know what you're measuring against to determine you have a "bottleneck".

The i5 8400 is no super CPU, but replacing it with another slightly more capable i5 is not going to be massive jump either. You're better off looking for a i7 8700 non-K instead. And this is not even knowing whether or not your impressions are correct/justified.

Cheers!

Thank you all for the replies.

My system specs:
  • i5 8400
  • ASUS ROG Astrid RTX 2060
  • Gigabyte z390 gaming X
  • Corsair Vengeance PRO RGB 3200 2x8gb
  • Corsair CX650m
  • NZXT Kraken x62 280mm
  • 2x Kingston A400 480gb
  • NZXT H500i

- ASUS VG528QR 1080p 165hz

I am seeing bottlenecking in GTA V, I haven’t seen any increase in FPS since the upgrade, and CPU usage is at 80/90% while GPU usage is always at 30/40%. Though in Otter titels such as COD Black Ops 4 the gap is much closer.

So my system is fully capable of having a higher-end CPU. Current temps under load is at around 55 degrees celsius for both my CPU and GPU.
