Hey!

So as the title suggests I am upgrading my cpu, my I5 9400KF is not cutting it anymore with certain games and is maxing at 100% whilst my 3060 dosent hit 80%.
Is a 9TH I7 any good nowadays? This would allow me to not have to get a new MOBO, or should I just go for the 12th GEN or 13th Gen?

MY specs are:
Core I5 9400KF 6 CORE
RTX 3060 12GB
16GB DDR4
1TB M.2 SSD

1440P 144HZ MONITOR

thanks

Most likely, you'd go to 12th or 13th gen if you can afford it. New motherboard, new CPU.

If you can't afford it, you do something else.

We have no idea of your budget.

Your expectations, your level of disappointment with current hardware, and your specific games and settings all come into play when determining if "a 9TH I7 any good nowadays?"

More details?

If your talking new then the price of one would probably be similar to a 12400F and a new motherboard which would probably be a better bet. The 9700K would be a very noticeable upgrade and it's still a relevant CPU, whether it will be enough for you would depend on your workload. Ideally though your better off getting more if you can afford it.

What sort of budget do you have available?

Uprgrading a coffee lake platform doesn't really make much sense at current prices. While you can technically upgrade to something like 9700K or 9900K, these cpus are almost 3 times more expensive than something like 12400F which offers much better single threaded performace and comparable multi-thread performance at much less power and heat.
In short buying new old stock of 9900K cost about the same as 12400F with decent B series motherboard and a healthy helping of ram

I just upgraded my Z390 -i7 9700k-RTX 3080 system to a Z690 - i7 13700k - RTX 3080. I am a huge 9700k fanboi and have resisted any notion to upgrade the CPU until I saw the 13700k.
That being said. The 13700k is an absolute beast and I would recommend the upgrade from a 9th Generation chip or older to a 13th Generation i5 13600k or i7 13700k.
9th Generation was the last generation to use socket 1151(300) it was also the first i9 the i9 9900k . The 9th generation was a long lasting generation. The 13th Generation is in the same position as the 9th generation. The last generation on the 1700 socket and the first i7 to replace the previous i9 12900k as a direct equal core count.
The 13th generation is the first time to seriously consider upgrading from the 9th generation. - 9700k owner and 9th Generation fanboi since 2018
P.S.
I had to flash the BIOS on the ASUS TUF Z690(12th Generation) mobo with a $50 12th generation Celeron to get the 13th generation i7 to post.
We really could use BIOS flashback buttons on ALL Zed motherboards..... ASUS if you are listening!!
Also be prepared if you buy a 13600k, 13700k or 13900k , they run really hot under heavy load even on a good AIO, everyone says it's normal. But these aren't the temps you are used to seeing.

It's an ok upgrade but I think the second hand prices are high and you would do better spending a little more to get a 12600k and B660 Mobo. That will allow you max usage of the GPU, overall jump in system performance and a path for upgrade to Raptor lake in the future.
