Hi All,

Let me quickly tell you the situation.

I currently have a Dell (Yuk I know) XPS 700.
X6800 core 2 duo extreme
4 gig mem
2 x 7900 GTX in SLI

Only a 750 power supply with 16amps on the 12v rails.

Because it's a dell I can only upgrade the power to 1000w power supply.
But the XPS 700 needs a "Special" power supply, it needs a 24pin AND 20pin so the 1000w is it's the best I can get without doing a whole lot of changes.
So the 1000w was only has 18amp on the each of it's 12v rails and the total watts are high enough etc.

My question really is the 2 x 7900's are really old and I'm looking for a new single graphics card.
I'm going to get the 1000w anyway so what's the best can I run with that power supply?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Denzil

1000W can run any single card out today, for example the 5970 2GB edition which is the fastest card out on the market costing upwards of 700 bucks only requires a 650 Watt PSU. So you can't really go wrong with anything you pick, just get the best you can afford.

So u mean u have 750W PSU with 16amps on 12v rails????
wow...

Can u show us the link to your "1000W" PSU plan?
And yes, 7900 is really old today, u can get a better card with newest tech better than that...

If that's one of the Dells that can do both crossfire and SLI without hacked drivers (the were a few), then that PSU should be able to run either two 5870s in CF or a single 5970. I think two 5970s may be a bit much for that PSU as well as overkill for that CPU, but it should run if you wanted to do that :D.

I think you have something confused. There's simply no way a 750w PSU has only 16 amps on the +12v rail and if it did there's no way it could be powering two 7900GTXs.
It's also extremely unlikely that a 1000w PSU would only have 36 amps.
Anyway if you are running 2 7900GTXs on your current PSU you don't need to replace it. You can likely handle almost any single graphics card. I would recommend the HD5850 if you have a large monitor(1920x1080+) and want something high end. For resolutions below that an HD5770 would be very good and much less expensive.

Well thank you all for the replies.

I'll certainly go for a nice HD5850.

Maybe I'm a bit confused on the +12V rails. (16amp x2 atm for the 7900GTX's)
(1000W I thought was 18amp x 2 connectors so 36Amp for a new card)
But they recommend higher, Jyjjy the Dell power supplies are **** they are from 2006/7)

The worst thing that could happen would be my wife would get a brand new graphics card and I'd be jealous lol.
