I want to upgrade my build for $600 USD. What will be better to upgrade to, AM5 or to upgrade to a 4070 Super?

My specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 5600X
GPU: RTX 3060 Ti
RAM: 2 x 8GB
Monitor: 1440p @ 165hz

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Since you have the RTX3060Ti, the upgrade wouldn't be worthwhile with the RTX4070 Super. In fact you should be fine as is...though what does the rest of your specs look like?

Please list the specs to your current build like so:
When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

According to the power supply but would probably update to the better graphics card alongside a bump up to at least 32GB of RAM.

In my own world I would wait out the AM5 until after 9000 releases and they start running hard to resist sale prices on 7xxx.

edit- bet you will be able to get a song of a deal on some 14th gen Intel... ;)

Sell the RTX 3060 Ti, and use the proceeds towards the upgrade. It should be able to fetch you $200-$225 USD.

RTX 4070 Ti Super ($800) + R5 5600X

OR

RTX 4070 Super ($600) + Ryzen 7 5700X3D ($200)

Selling the Ryzen 5 5600X should garner $80.

OR

Forget the PC upgrades and buy a Steam Deck OLED

Question: What are your main game(s) to play?

As you are on 1440p, I would say yes to a gpu upgrade. The 3060ti's 8gb vram buffer is quickly becoming and issue for 1440p. Not a fan of the 12gb buffer on the 4070 super either. A 7900gre is nearly as fast, and has a 16gb, and easily $50 cheaper. Take that $50 and get a 32gb kit of ram.

What are the types of games you play? Most likely getting a better GPU will net you better FPS but I would not put a higher power graphics card in a PC with a 550w PSU so you would likely need a better PSU as well. What is the exact PSU in the PC?

You dont have a bad setup as it currently stands, you could probably game on that platform for another 2 or 3 years. The steps that i would recommend taking would be to:

1. Upgrade to 32GB of RAM

2. Upgrade that power supply to a decent 750W or 850w unit, since youll need the extra power for most of the higher end future GPU's unless theres some transistor magic that happens in the next few years.

3. Pickup an RX 7900 GRE, 7900 XT or RTX 4070 ti (super). The 7900GRE is the best priced and quite well balanced. It is possible that you can get 7900 XT \ RTX 4070 ti super performance out of it with a VRAM overclock, but that is always a lottery ticket. Some cards will handle it just fine, others wont OC at all, your mileage will definitely vary, it still ofers great performance even at stock though.

I would start with a new PSU and a 7800xt, and if you can stretch the budget a bit more, 32gb ram. The 7900gre is faster, but not $50 faster.

I would then sell the 3060ti, and buy a 5700x3d.

I don't really pay any attention to max or average FPS. The minimum is what matters, for a smooth gaming experience.
In my opinion, that is also highly subjective. You have to be getting at least a minimum amount of average FPS for games to be playable as well. If your minimums are within 10 fps of your average but your average FPS is only 55 (45fps 1%) that is going to play "worse" than say 90 fps with 40 fps 1% lows. The difference here would be more consistent frame times, less stutters due to fps drops, but nearly twice the perceived input lag. One scenario would be better for certain games than the other.
