[SOLVED] Upgrading from a Pentium G4560... (Intel or AMD?)

Hello Everyone,

I am looking to upgrade most of my system, obviously. I will be keeping the GPU and PSU. (Hopefully RAM too). What do you think I should upgrade to? Stick to Intel or switch over to AMD? Does the RAM need to be upgraded?


Here are my current system specs.
CPU: Intel Pentium G4560
Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo tower
GPU: Founders Edition RTX 3070ti
Ram: 8 GB DDR4
Motherboard: MSI B250M Gaming Pro
PSU: Corsair 750 Watt
Storage: 2 SATA SSD's, 1 M.2 SSD

PC Uses:
AutoCAD (Light load, nothing crazy)
Revit (Same as above)
Gaming - World of Tanks, Halo Infinite, Various Battlefield games, Tomb Raider, etc
Heavy Chrome usage, I love tabs....

Budget:
~$700
I can do more, but I would like to keep it reasonable.

With Alder lake coming, you may want to wait, otherwise, AMD is the way to go, right now. 8gb ram is a bit low, for gaming, these days. 16gb minimum, with 32gb being more of longevity choice.

Would you personally recommend waiting for Alder lake? I also have heard that the AM4 socket is at its end of life with the next batch of AMD processors.

It seems that every time I want to upgrade, something new is always coming LOL

If you can live with your system's performance, for now, then yea wait. Keep in mind Alder Lake may require you to purchase DDR5, which is going to cost more, unless there is a good availability of ddr4 capable boards.

You already have a reasonably new motherboard that supports 6xxx and 7xxx Intel CPUs. I would think an i7 7xxx (non-K) would be the way to go
An I5-7500 is around $150. Get a matched set of 2x8GB DIMMs and high quality cooling (for quiet). Then use your budget for a better (or multiple) monitors.

An i5 7500, with their GPU, still would be quite the mismatch. Even an i7 7700 would only be about the same performance as an R3 3300x. A 3070ti really should be paired with at least a 6c/12t Zen3 or 10th/11th gen i5.

But they already have the GPU. Being a mismatch is OK. I didn't see anything in the original post that said they had to have max FPS. For the items listed as uses, I would look at the entire system. That means having budget available for more than just core components.

A CPU only upgrade removes the need for a clean OS install with a motherboard change.

I like the idea, but I am rocking a dual 4k monitor setup at the moment. I am leaning towards AMD at this point due to the cores. I want this build to be solid for at least 5 years.

I am currently going between these two CPUs

Ryzen 5 5600x
OR
Ryzen 7 3700x

Honestly not that interested in the new Intel CPUs anymore with the DDR5.

If you have any other AMD suggestions, please let me know.

The 5600x is going to be faster, in gaming, than a 3700x. The 5800x is the next best chip, with regards to multithreading, and might be a good idea with you keeping this 5 years. 5900x and 5950x are quite a bit more expensive.

I like the idea, but I am rocking a dual 4k monitor setup at the moment. I am leaning towards AMD at this point due to the cores. I want this build to be solid for at least 5 years.

Almost all gaming performance for resolution would come from the video card. I don't think a newer gen CPU will help your video card play at 4k resolution any better than a 7th gen i5 or i7.
