USB C to Displayport not working?

MSI GL62M 7RD (GTX 1050 edition) my USB C to display port cable wont work. When I plug it in, my monitor detects something, but the computer keeps saying "Device not recognized." Could it be a thunderbolt and not a usb c? The site says it is in fact usb c so im a little curious as to why its not working. Monitor 100% works over HDMI (120 hz) and would love to be able to experience the full 144hz. Any solutions?

USB-C to DisplayPort adapters only work if the USB port has video output capability. Not all USB-C ports have this capability, it is an optional feature. May need to check if your laptop's port supports that.

Your laptop has mini Display Port connector. Use that, if your monitor supports Display Port connection.

yeah that was going to be my last resort. I already have the cable so i wanted to see if i can use it instead of getting a new cable for mini dp. thanks again tho

Yeah I don't see any indication of the website that the USB 3 supports video out, looks like its just USB only. https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GL62M-7RD/Overview

ah mustve rushed it then. no worries, just ordered a mini dp to dp, thanks for all the information!
