Usb device not recognized (Mass Storage) but optical mouse works???

OK here's my deal:


I am getting the error:

Usb device not recognized. When i insert any Mass storage (Thumb Drive, or hard drive). However, My wireless mouse and Netgear wireless card that runs both off of USB works. I have tried the following.

1. Unplugged my PC for hours as I have read worked for some people.

2. Reformated my drive to see if that works. No luck

3. Went to the device manager and unistalled the device/driver and installed again


The computer that I have is a Gateway 500x...running windows xp...I got the computer from a friend of mine and put windows xp on it that i had from my Compaq persario...It works fine, but I thought that I was missing the driver for the gateway..so I went to Gateways website looked up my computer and downloaded and installed all the drivers for the computer...(maybe I am missing one the usb one though).

do i have to find the driver for it to recongize the USB device? If so where at?

Any help would be great.

Are you running SP3? If not, you need to be (along with all the other updates).

In your device manager (Control Panel/System), are all of your devices installed properly?

You are using an illegal install of XP, you do realize?

I have it narrowed down to one thing now... I have a Netgear n150 wireless card usb drive that is hooked up to it.....when I disable the wireless internet, then the USB's work fine..but when its enabled...it doesnt...

SP3 and it is all updated

Which USB port do you have the network adapter plugged in to, front or back? Try to plug the USB or HDD into the front panel USB ports and the network adapter into the back (along with the mouse and keyboard).

Thats how I have it set up....the network adapted is plugged into the back along with the optical mouse and the HDD is plugged in the front..is it possible that the network adapter is taking up too much power..cause when its plugged in, no lights on my thumb drive come on?? just a guess??

It is more likely that your front panel USB ports are not up to par (they do wear out and are notoriously unreliable over time in many cases). Have you tried to plug the USB drive directly into one of the mobo USB ports on the back of the system?

Just tried it in all of the back USB ports...does the exact same as the front

It may simply be a matter of using more than the available power on the USB sub-system, but unless you have a sick system that should not be the case.

From a USB perspective, do you have other USB devices attached other than the keyboard, mouse, network adapter, and USB storage devices?

Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY. Yes that’s it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don’t really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power.
First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be “rebooted” also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices!
So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.
Hope this helps someone fix that pesky “USB device not recognized” Windows error!

Did you ever solve this? I have the same problem, exactly, and it's very hard to find any assistance or solution. Unplugging the adpater brings back a usb hub, but attaching a thumb drive (or any storage) stops it all from working again! The unplugging is useless - I left mine overnight, no differnce. Any advice welcomed.

Update: I found this on another forum, and it worked for me! Nothing else did!

" I actually just solved the problem earlier today. I had my USB wireless USB adaptor (for the modem) plugged in on a quite long lead. Shortening the lead was enough to give me enough power for my other devices.

I discovered this by unplugging all my USB devices to see if the flash drive would work, and then plugging them back in one by one. Voila, the adaptor stopped the flash drive working."

Anyone know why the length of wire matters? I used a 2ft instead of a 10 ft, and all's well. Odd - I'd used the 10 ft cable on another very similar PC, for the same purpose, with no issues. I was lucky to find that comment!
