Wow, been a Tom's reader for like a million years and never got to posting in these forums before... This thread is just so acquard I had to join in :)

Anyhow for the REAL heavy computing, nothing like my 4MHz XT computer, all packed with 640K memory, a 360K diskette drive and 2x10MB HD. Very useful at running DOS 6, norton commander and turbo pascal!!

On the serious side, very unfortunately about 2 years ago it's HD's had finally died  ... I even thought back then to try and find some used XT HD on ebay for it, but guess what the prices were quite ridiculous. Hey... I can still probably find one now!! Whada ya say, maybe I can overclock to 6MHz and sell it in Canada

wat a way to start posting....

neway it reminded me of ibm 386 notebook which still runs (though it hard disk has gone bonkers) gud to boot linux of the floppy and stare at the screen thinking wat to do next.

the best thing about it is that it help's in meditating while constantly staring at it. 😛

hey those run at 4.77mhz iirc. don´t make em look worse than they are

There shall be no end to the horror.

BTW, i'm scary to turn it on cause if it does a shortcut and burn my house, it happend with my old computer, (Pentium 3) There has a Shortcut and the half of my desk has burned.

Im gonna overclock it and sell it.

worst business plan ever.

quick recap.

windows 95. software over ten years old.
16meg of ram yeah???

66mhz. even if you got that thing to run at 100mhz its not going to be noticable. flash would make that thing grind to halt.

i bet the postage is more than the fu.cking PC.

Hey uhh, i remember few years ago, i played with it to play Starcraft, and it has lag, maybe by overclocking, there might have less lags isn'it? Or do ill need to put 2x 9200 SLI to run starcraft? (Hey, maybe ill can run f.e.a.r on it!!)

Hi. I would like to know if my old computer can work again. I will tell the specs:

CPU: Pentium 66 MHZ
Hard disk: WD 500 mb
GFX card: Unknown
Sound card: None
Network card: Unknown

Does it can work again?

you guys are missing the point, it's like old cars or old planes.
the point isn't to get it to do something, but to get it to work.

it might work again.
know that most MB companies stop their Hardware support after 5 years,
so drivers and info on the MB ( jumper config, cable config) will be a hassle to get. You might be lucky with older Driver sites that have not been taken off or erased.

you'll need to check a few things.

1) the battery on the MB: if that pc has been off for more than say 6 years , the batt, might have a little power issue. If ever the batt was flat, the CMOS will be out ( not an issue) and the clock will be out( PROBLEM) some/ most pcs will not boot if they dont have a correct date and time.
you'll have to out the correct time and date in the bios.

2) your PSU : before you turn it on check the psu, open it and inspect it ( without the power cable on 😛 ). look for oxydation on the parts, yellow liquid on the top of condensators, cracked transistors.
anything major damage might start a fire in the psu once it's start to pump out those watts.

3) on the MB look for a yellow liquid on the top of the condensators ( the vertical cylinders 😛 ) this will indicate damage to the MB ( might not boot)

BEFORE you start anything get the drivers for Win 95. remember that win 95 does not have many drivers natively packed with it ( I wont say that it doesn't have ANY, but i pretty sure that it doesn't have much)
you'll need a Floppy 3.5" with the minimal boot structure and dont forget Fdisk on it 😛. win 95 doesn't boot from CD's not like win 2K or WinXP.

you do know that u can put anything from win 95 to win 2K on it? it's justa a question of HDD space and patience. the more recent the windows the more patience you'll need, because it will lag baddly with win 2K on it. I've managed win2k on a PI 90 with 16Megs of ram. moving the mouse was a roadtrip in it's self. (only slightly exagerated)
i think your best option would be a win 98. just because win95 sucks soooooooooooooooo much. i wouldn't use it even as things u put under glasses on tables, you'll have a the equivament of a BSOF and the glass you slip off the disk and onto the floor 😛 ROTFL

it's gong to be a hard but thrilling resurection
good luck!

Give you a tip. When you get F.E.A.R to run on that rig at playable FPS with the quality turned up then you can come back to this forum and post. But do not post again until you've got it sorted.

This is just too good!
OK, you found an AC cable to plug it into the wall, right?
Now find an extension cord, take the computer outside, plug it in and turn it on. If no smoke escapes, then it may just still work!!!
Now your desk/house should be safe, though one can never be sure...

Thanks a lot dude, ill follow your steps. But i don't want to open the PSU, cuz i might hav an electric shock or something...

Have fun with that one. If you overclock, the old games might run too fast.

Lol as far as I know FEAR requires a 3Ghz processor so if you can get it that far then ill buy it off you for $200, since you must have some magic chip that breaks Moors law or something. Maybe its an early version of a light processor that was lost in the "impossible inventions" factory. Maybe its made from a 2nm process. You never know with these old cpus. (Maybe I should shutup now b4 I say something worth saying)

EDIT: When I came to this thread it had the whole 16 pages on one page, thats a whole lot of scrolling.

Not true. I have an Athlon XP 2500+ that runs at 1.8Ghz and I ran FEAR fine, so 1.8 is the new target. That's if he can find a big enough hard drive to install it on.

No need to get technical I'm trying to make a point here thats all. Still ill pay $150 for it if he gets it to 1.8!

I'm sorry but i have to say this... you give canadians a bad name,

the turbo does nothing... that was the joke and by the way if your from quebec your barley canadian!

😀 😛
I can't help on keeping on laughing while i'm tring to finish dis thread..... is he really a canadian?i can't believe he didn't get the jokes, or was it he's just keeping his temper frm exploding? :?: even in malaysia dat pc wont sell....

The sad thing about all this is that I actually have working models of: 8088, 286, 386-16, 486-33, Pentium I -100, Pentium II -266, Pentium Pro 266, K6/2 -550, Pentium III - 933, Pentium IV -2Ghz....all with working O.S.'s ranging from DOS 2 to DOS 6.22, Win95 to WinXP...

All this just sitting on display at my shop. I have customers come in and actually work with one of these computers, thinking that they are fast and/or powerful....until I show them the new custom rig I just built for another customer.

So, there is actually usefulness in getting these old rigs to work. Someone may actually want one for nostalgic purposes. LOL!!!!
