I've created a few VHS tapes from which I would like to extract the audio, and
record it as MP3 files.

I can capture the VHS to my computer ok, or to my Pano E-200.

All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

I often do this for myself. I usually use either Windows recorder to import
and create a .wav file and then Roxio to create an MP3 and/or a cd audio
track to play in the car.

Graham,

Are you just playing the audio and recording it with a Mic?

I had been considering copying the VHS to to my HD and then creating a DVD.
After that I planned on getting the audio from it, and then converting to
MP3... seemd like there should be a better method than that..

What's wrong with connecting the audio out from the VCR to the line in of
your sound card? Any decent audio card already has RCA input; If not, you
can get a RCA to 1/8 pin adaptor- but I would suggest getting a decent audio
card if you're serious about sound, an M-audio Audiophile 24/96 is not that
expensive.

I don't understand. You want the audio only? If so, what's with the DVD
part?

I do have a Creative Labs CT 4830 sound card that I could install.... would
that do it?

I had thought that since you could extract the audio from an AVI file, that
might be a feasible approach. I really don't know and I'm kind of fumbling
around in the dark yet.

I don't know that card, but I don't see why not as long as it has a line in
(even motherboard integrated sound chip have that now). Like I said, just
connect the left and right output channel from the VCR to the line in of the
sound card. If the card doesn't have RCA jack, get yourself a Y RCA to 1/8"
adapter to make the connection, then fire up your recording application,
press play on the VCR and record in your recording app. If you still have
the documentation for the sound card, it probably explaine how to record in
more detail in it.

Forget about that idea, it might work but it's making an awfull lots of
complications for what is basically a very simple task.

I did get and MP3 working from my convoluted process, but thanks to the your
messages I have another method that works for me, and might be of interest to
anyone else wanting to create a MP3 from a Video tape. I Did the following:

Downloaded free Messer Sound recorder (windows recorder did about 60 seconds)
Downloaded bladeenc.dll (for MP3 recording)
Downloaded lame_enc.dll (for MP3 recording)

Since I have a Pinnacle Capture device installed, I had to start Capture in
Studio 8.

I could then record MP3 directly wile playing the VHS tape.

This is the best that this old man could do... 72 years young this may. :))

Thanks again for getting me pointed in the right direction.
