Video stuttering-BIG problem

I've got a big problem that I just cannot find a solution
for.

Everytime I play a video file, be it a streaming file on
the internet, a dvd played on the dvd rom, or even
visualisations in media player, everything works fine for
a couple of minutes, but then the video starts to
stutter. The audio works fine and it isn't my connection
because, as I've said, it even happens in offline
applications. I have scanned my laptop (oh yeah, I'm
using a laptop, if that helps) for any viruses and all
spyware/adware/parasites and the like, but everything's
clean. However, when I do play a video and it starts to
stutter, my CPU usage shoots up to 100%, and even
scrolling a page or writing text stutters! It's as if the
computer can't hack it-which it should be able to; it's
by no means top of the range, but it has a 1.8 GHZ
processor, 256 RAM and 20 gig hard drive (10 gig of which
is free) and it was able to run videos a few months ago-
it just can't anymore!

Any help you can offer would be deeply appreciated!
Thanks!

There are some XP problems where CPU usage can advance to 100% and cause
problems .. I think a search of microsofts web site may help you
