Vista upgrade to win 7 for free?

Hi, recently i heard from friends that Vista can be upgraded to Win 7 for free? How?

My notebook and desktop are both Dell machines, both been installed with Vista Home edition.

An upgrade will only be available for free if you bought the machines during a particular time period. If you did you should already know about the upgrade offer.
