With all the new technolgy set to come out soon, I've decided to wait to get a new computer. With USB 3.0 coming out, hex-cores coming, and even some weird interface from intel called lightpeak.

So if I want to use my computer from purchase point to the next 5 years, how long should I wait? Oh and I'm not waiting for lightpeak, if its like their video cards it will suck.

I'm looking at some i7 setups, but I'm torn between dual video cards, and going all out and getting the ones with the three card setups!

I guess I could just get add on cards as the connector types come out, but where's the fun in that? What if the rig I get has all the slots full of stuff already?

Or what if I don't feel like tinkering with it after getting it? Wait until hex cores at least and USB 3.0?

Well there's a few ways you could go about it really depending on what kind of budget you're on. You could wait until some of the newer technology becomes available and then get that - hexacore, USB 3.0, 6GB/s SATA, new graphics cards etc.

Or the alternative would be to wait until this new technology becomes available and hope that it will lower the price on some of the current technology and then you could pick up a very powerful rig for a bit cheaper. Hexacore chips are just around the corner really and USB 3.0 etc. are already available in some of the higher end motherboards today.

Whichever way you decide to do it I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to hang on a little while. I don't think you will have long to wait either :)

Well I thought build one, but ...... HEY! lame! I checked the prices again.. the video card came down, but the RAM is still expensive!

I was looking at some prebuilt ones at costco, and there were a few ones with dual video card setups but they also have like 6 RAM slots and crazy specs. I looked around piecing together the prices and it seems your saving about 200 building it yourself.

i7 299
ram 2gb x 6 ddr3 53x6 318
motherboard 120
windows 7 (get it cheap as oem version) 99
gts 250 x2 100 x2 200
800w psu 150
case 100

:/ thats not really figuring shipping in there either, then if you get it now and have to add in extra component cards its more

You usually do save yourself a fair bit of cash building it yourself. And you have the benefit of knowing where everything is and how it was installed which will make it easier to upgrade in the future if you wish to do so. After building my own a few years back, I'd never buy a pre-built comuter...don't think I'd trust someone else to put it together for me 😉

Same here, but its about the same cost buying it prebuilt. The only thing i guess they could cheap you out on is maybe a low end psu or some high latency RAM.

The wait is over Sata 6, USB 3 and Hexacore is out already. More then likely your not ready to pay the premium to have it though. The i7 980x is going for $1100. Theres no reason to wait if your budget aint well over $1000

Well, Intel Hexa at $1100 is an option only for very few.

A possibly more viable option to consider is the AMD Hexa. The Phenom II X6 is just around the corner, hopefully in May 2010 while the AMD 890 chipset where these Hexa will be ideal is already out. So that is just 2-3 months wait...
