Okay ya'll, I bit the bullet and am now purchacing the parts to replace my faithful 300MHz PII. So now, I'm getting the parts in the mail over the next couple days. I'm gonna list what I got, you guys tell me what you think, and how I should go about building the little ah heck.

Parts, all going into Antec SX830:
-AMD Athlon 1.2GHz, 266MHz FSB (Retail)
-Asus A7A266, w/o sound (Retail)
-2 Crucial 256MB PC2100 sticks
-IBM Deskstar 60GXP 40GB Hard Drive (Retail)
-Voodoo2 (for now, until I get my next paycheck to get a GeForce3)
-SBLive! Platinum
-various other items

So, now that I've got it all coming to me, I just need to wait till it gets here before I can put it together. I really can't wait. I've already downloaded the BIOS update for the A7A266 and SBLive, and, if I get the GeForce3, I'll get those drivers too. Other than that, is there anything else I can do to prepare for building? Adios!

Just out of curiousity.... did you get the Live! Platinum 5.1, or just the Live! Platinum? If you just got the regular one, I would suggest returning it and getting the 5.1 since I comes with a plethera of additional features, and a much updated Live! Drive.
 
Only 256Mb RAM? 😉

3Dfx will never die... just the staff of NVidia when I charge at 'em with a machinegun...
 
Erm... I was aware of that fact when I bought the card... around the time it was released. Over time, I have forgotten that fact. Thanks for reminding me Griz.

Well, I don't have the original LiveDrive, since I got this card from a friend who had it (for free too). I s'pose that I would be better to call it just a SBLive!, rather than Platinum. Otherwise, it's been a good card for me... no problems yet.

Yeah, I mean I'm getting two sticks of 256MB, giving me 512MB. BTW, anyone on here know if Win98 has a problem with that much RAM?

512mb of ram and win98 is fine. I've even run up to 630mb
with no perceivable problems, but ppl say win98 has trouble with more than 512mb.

no, win98 won't have problems with over 512 meg, it just won't utilize anything more than 512.

i know that he is getting more than this, but how can 256 not be enough? im running a pIII 450mhz with only 128mb of ram.

the reason i ask is that i am about to get a new athlon system, and i was gonna buy only 256mb. do i really need more than that?

my system will be very similar to his, except with an A7M266 mobo and a 64mb geforce2 mx400 video card, and onboard sound.
 
windows 98se is optimized for 128 megs of ram. If your running win2kpro sometimes its hard to make it use more than 180 megs of ram, you have to run TONS of programs at once.
But still 98se really doesn't use much over 128, but some programs will use it, just not the OS.
I guess you could force it to, the more ram you have the smaller you can make your page file thus making everything stay in ram.

With ref to the voodoo2, I seem to remember you need "special" drivers to make it work with an athlon, maybe someone can post you a link.
I also have 256 meg of ram (pc150 cas2 corsair) in my 98 system and that is more than enough for my needs, and often have quite a lot open at once, start with 256, if you find your accessing the swap file a lot (lot of HDD activity) then stick some more in!

Sooounds great SammyBoy. It's almost the same system I'm running, you'll love the speed. I just have a Soundblaster Value & it's fine. I only run 256 megs of sd 133 ram (cause they only had that & 200 fsb when I built). The last machine I built was the almost exactly the same as your building excepth I put a Geforce 3 in that SCREAMER. Fastest dam game machine I've ever played with.

RaM prices are so low not getting 512 is almost a crime, spend the extra 20-30 bucks, you wont regret it when you open up that 15th IE window.
