It allows you to pull and replace a hard drive without having to turn off the computer.

Usually used on servers' RAID arrays like RAID0+1,RAID1, RAID5, RAID6

I use fcp on an imac with a datatale 2 disk enclosure with two 2tb disks installed that shows as EXT HD 4.1 & EXT HD 4.2 on my desktop. Both the raid jumpers are in the off position . I recently purchased another 2TB HDD . Can I take out both the disks or any one of them to replace with the new disk? i want to back up data from EXT HD 4.1 and another usb portable 500gb drive to the new disk for transferring to another Mac?

you could take out 4.2, replace it, copy the data and then replace the other one, but that really has nothing to do with RAID, you're simply using the drives as standalone in an enclosure.
