[SOLVED] What upgrade from R5-1600 on Asus B-350

Currently running a R5-1600.
Asus ROG STRIX B350-F won't support the 5000 series. looks like it tops out at R5-3600/R7-3800/R9-3900
What's the best option within those boundaries?
GPU is RTX2060. 16 Gb RAM. Seasonic G 550W PS.

What motherboard do you have?

If the target use is gaming a 3600X would be as good as you need anyway. Getting into the 8 or 12 core CPU's will depend increasingly on how robust the VRM of your board is.

That should handle a 3700X or 3800X comfortably enough if not overclocking (which isn't recommended with Ryzen 3000 anyway).

A 3900X might also work well enough if not used excessively hard on hours- long mathematical simulations or 3D renderings and what not that use all-cores and extensive AVX instructions. Keep an eye on VRM temperature, if Asus doesn't give you a VRM temp sensor then get an IR thermometer.

But again, if this only for gaming a 3600X is all you need.

I would probably choose a 3700x. Lower wattage, for those early Ryzen boards to handle easier, and 8c/16t. The 3600x and 3800x have higher TDP's, than the 3600, and 3700x. 3900x I would have concerns with your motherboard VRM's handling it. 300 series ryzen boards weren't as well made, as 400 and 500 series were.
