88-91 was a crazy time for development of music.
metal, thrash, hardcore, hip-hop, pop, industrial, whatever you labeled things; we had so many albums that wouldn't ever be bested.
odd mix of raw + digital that turned out some of the best sounds:
Beneath the Remains, Lights...Camera... Revolution, Pretty Hate Machine, Cowboys from Hell, Epic, Scumdogs of the Universe, People's Instinctive Travels & the Paths of Rythm, 3 Feet High & Rising, Paul's Boutique, Vivid, Danzig, And Justice For All, The Massacre, Use Your Illusion, Dr. Feelgood, X, Charmed Life, Temple of the Dog, Ten,..

let's say we have a choice, a 5 consecutive year period of music and that's all you can hear for eternity;
would i choose 68-72 or 88-92?
that would be a difficult decision...

Band name: Anaal Nathrakh.... One of my favorite extreme Metal bands of all time ! I like their brutal and heavy musical style. Mostly BLACK Metal, but with a bit touch of Melodic "Industrial" BLACK Metal, and Grindcore genres to some extent as well. They have this originality and their own unique HEAVY sound.

Anaal Nathrakh name is taken from the movie Excalibur and means "Serpent's Breath". The band's name is pronounced [ˈɛənæl ˈnæθræk] ("ANN- all [as in "shall"] NATH-rak").

Lyrical themes must be drawn from context as the band has stated repeatedly that they will NOT publish lyrics, for obvious reasons.

Country of origin: United Kingdom. Location: Birmingham, West Midlands, England.

This is Brutal avant-garde as well as "INDUSTRIAL" Black Metal ! Get ready for some ear-shattering music.

Change of mood......

Band name: VARGRAV. The Name of the band comes from the union of the (Swedish) words varg (wolf) and grav (grave). “Vargrav is the rest where a sinister wisdom lurks only to rise again.” The name is also a palindrome with 7 letters. The number 7 is the number of complement. A number of time and space, representing wisdom, perfection, balance and immortality.

Genre: Raw/Symphonic BLACK METAL.

Country of origin: FINLAND (one of the best extreme/underground Finnish Metal bands). Lyrical themes: Loneliness, Solitude, Hatred/Supremacy, Desolation/darkness, Depression, Individuality.

Now that, and your comment, reminds me of:

I believe DEVO stated, with regard to this, that Weird Al wrote a better DEVO song than they ever did. Or, in the words of Mark Mothersbough:
I was in shock. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. He sort of re-sculpted that song into something else and... I hate him for it, basically.

Yeah, thats the one I meant. He almost did Devo better than Devo do devo

i was still in High School when this came out, Devo was one of the first bands I got into.

I wanted one of those hats when I was a kid

Devo now have vodka... because of course they do.

I absolutely love this pure THRASH METAL/Speed Metal band, especially their older albums. I consider this band to be one of the best to spawn out of GERMANY, similar to Sodom, Overkill, Destruction, KREATOR and EXUMER bands.

Name:: TANKARD. Their first 3 albums are real old-school Thrash Metal classics/gems ! Later on the band changed their sound, and dropped the thrashy riffs/stuff a bit as well. Nonetheless, this is a very good THRASH Metal band.

Of course, cited as one of the "big four" of the German thrash scene, they are mostly known for their lyrical themes, which were mainly centered on Alcohol, beer, Society and life. I was quite surprised that these guys managed to sing about basically the same thing for 35 years. Well, lyrics apart, the music itself was pretty good, especially in the 80s. However, the issue I always had is that it didn't manage to keep me focused on their records.

The amount of good and superior stuff in this genre is the primary reason though. At least, Tankard's first few records are worthy of being looked at for any thrashers out there. One thing we can give this band credit for is appearing differently from everyone else in the scene and not following the "Who makes the most Noisy and evil music?" race.

The compositions showed a higher degree of variety and complexity. In terms of musicianship, and the dudes had reached the next tier. The fact that four of the musicians contributed at least one own composition underlined this development.

I must also say this though. Many thrash metal bands have gone through significant changes throughout the nineties with mostly negative results. TANKARD also adapted certain changes to its soundscapes but while other bands flirted with gothic rock, industrial metal or southern rock, the German quartet managed to stay true to its sound and identity.

The Tankard is still unmistakably a thrash metal group with powerful drum patterns, aggressive bass guitar play, fast guitar riffs and vocals that favor energy over technique. The dry production recalls more technical genre records such as Metallica's ...And Justice for All.

MUST watch this short video documentary as well, if you like Randy's guitar solos and riffs, and obviously the early Ozzy Osbourne band's albums. Comments from OZZY, Sharon Osbourne, Rob Trujillo, Steve Vai, Rob Halford and others.
