Reflecting on the COVID lockdowns, one of the few positive things spawning from it were a lot of musicians doing performances from home.

I think the pandemic would have been a lot harder for me to get through if I didn't have music.

Some of my favorites:

My favorite vocal performance of LaPlante. An excellent musician.

Great song, great vocalist.

I specifically remember watching this live from beginning to end, sitting in my spare room with nothing to do since everything was shut down. This stream did really prove Shinoda's point that the one of the many reasons that Linkin Park's music evolved over time was due to how simple and easy it was to create this type of music. Created something that sounds like a legit demo in jut an hour.

Okay, now time for something heavy dark and brutal !

Some tracks from a legendary BLACK METAL band from Sweden: "DARK FUNERAL". Unlike the "True Norwegian Black Metal" BM genre, these guys are more technical.

Dark Funeral is an interesting band in my opinion. They are one of the most well known black metal bands from Sweden, alongside Marduk, Dissection, and Watain. Of course, almost all black metal listeners are aware of their debut, and the album, entitled The Secrets of the Black Arts is heavily praised for its immersive album cover.

It's almost a visual portal into the music contained within, depicting a bluish nightsky shrouding a slightly frosted, castle-like structure of stone. Several hooded figures appear to be partaking in some sort of clandestine ritual, standing around a mysterious tarp-covered object.

As an additional touch, sparse trees and boulders stand on the mountains in the background. It's a true work of art, and it certainly deserves the praise it gets. I still wear TEEs of these album covers.

Dark Funeral is a band that you either love or hate. They are frequently ridiculed for their crystal clear production quality or for their ‘over the top’ approach to the subject matter.

I consider both these attributes to be largely positive, and it works to great effect. I have been listening to them since long, and it can hardly be denied that Dark Funeral is one of today's best black metal bands in terms of playing, atmosphere and songwriting.

Black metal generally is a niche acquired taste. It takes a particular endeavor from the band for an album to seduce the outsider, but musically, DARK FUNERAL distinguishes itself from other black metal acts, in that it definitely belongs to the style in terms of format and atmosphere, however there's a strong element of the Swedish metal sound that's apparent throughout.

The musicianship here is what one would expect from a black metal album. They are all competent musicians and players, but in lieu of doing anything flashy, they do an excellent job of keeping the tempos precise and perfect sounding.

Old-school SEPULTURA was really good ! Early albums were THRASH METAL masterpieces. When both Igor and Max Cavalera brothers left, the band's musical direction deviated from old-school Thrash, to more like NU-Metal with some Groove genre in the mix.

And the new vocalist Derrick Green sucks to be honest (no offense intended though). Anyways, I really love this Brazilian band. Just awesome.

This is an old-school lineup. MAX's vocals are still considered one of the best in this industry. I have seen them live and even met backstage !

Speaking of cover songs in music, Yngwie Malmsteen did a cover song, but for the pop band ABBA. One of the best METAL cover songs in my opinion.

"Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" is an ABBA cover and it is an instant classic. This tracks starts off with the great vocals provided by Mark Boals. This song is marvelous and features some insane guitar work. "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" finishes with a great jam session filled with great solos. Mats Olausson on keyboards and John Macaluso on drums stand on their own and help complete this musical masterpiece.

Alice In Chains - Heaven Beside You. But in this song, Jerry Cantrell is the lead vocalist, with backup from Layne.

Hello, I randomly clicked today on the youtube video while was listening to music and found a new band. I have never heard of them and the only information I could find about them is that the band is from India formed in 2015 and a picture of 2 band members (they look quite young) on some site at the bottom of the google search. I really hope that they are somewhat known in India cause the amount of views they have on YouTube is really sad... 1-2k for the most popular songs.
Can you tell me your opinion on this band based on those 2-3 songs I will post? I was really surprised when I heard them, usually when I click on those low view count random videos it is rather awful l or in the best case just okay/but not enough to add it to my playlist. Band name: KASCK

Hi, I was searching for this band and not much info is there regarding their status and popularity, but their music sounds good. Thrashy, but needs more polishing. Even I have not heard about them, but they might be an indie band from India.

According to the Metal archives it looks like the band is currently unsigned to any record label. They are independent as of now, and they have only released an EP. No full-length albums yet. But I like their music honestly speaking. They have talent.

Don't judge any band by the number of YT views they got though. Many are not even aware of this band so it's obvious their Music video views are going to be lower than other bigger international bands.

Yes, yes. no judging, what I meant to say that they are underrated, I know many bands who's popularity and view count is 1000x higher although they sound wayyy worse.

I was just pleasantly surprised because most of the time when I click on those kind of videos the band sounds just OK in the best case, therefore, I thought I'd share this one. But I really like their sound, a nice balance between og thrash and somewhat modern (older for the most part but I nice touch of newer things, if that makes any sense) may need a bit more polishing as you said but I would be happy to hear things they release in near future, and hopefully they do, they got talent imo.

They might not be Anthrax or Testament but based on the picture of themselves they look quite young, but they got potential, who knows how they might sound in 10 years.
Ty for the reply 👍.

Exactly, that was also my point. I understand what you are trying to say. Some bands are underrated, but even bigger bands from major record labels sound sometimes horrible, despite having more views on YT or any other channel.

I know some good underground bands who hardly have even 100 views, but their MUSIC is excellent ! Better than other major bands of the same genre. Some people tend to usually move with the crowd and the trend, but I don't. I think good talent is usually ignored in this world, especially in music.

Take for example this Black Metal/BM band from Netherlands. CIRITH GORGOR. Some of the their songs and videos have got far too less likes/views, despite this band being a major BM act, and their early albums being an instant classic in this genre. They put to shame other major BM bands by their music and originality.

Their early albums are still considered as one of the best BM music productions of all time. But of course, this style of music is not everyone's cup of tea. Just giving a random example. I know these have been uploaded 2 months ago only, but it serves as an example how good bands are usually ignored.

Agree 100%. That is why I always exclude myself from mainstream opinions and try to make my own. Never cared for what is popular at the certain time and to be part of a large group of people whether it is about music or anything else.

Btw not a really big fan of Black Metal. But I can clearly see that most of the people who are into it, would probably like this band.

In terms of instruments, I like the second song better.

I have a weird taste in metal, I like heavy instruments like idk in Death Core for example, instruments are usually not the problem for me, but the vocals are, so basically, I like harsh vocals but they need to have some sort of melody or rhythm to it, if that makes any sense, so it is quite hard for me to find bands to suite my liking. Heavy instruments and Harsh vocals which have melody to it ( idk how to describe it ) usually do not go together. That is the main reason why I was never really into Slayer ( I mean of course I have couple of their songs that I love, but that's about it ), instruments are fire, but I could never get over the vocals.
Edit: Even better example Lorna Shore.
Therefore, Thrash metal has been always the sweet spot for me.

For example this song👇 , although the vocals are not crazy harsh (creams/growls etc), but it can not be called soft by the most people's standards imo. But it is a nice example of what I mean when I say it needs to have some sort of melody/flow to it.

This doesn't impress me. Maybe I stopped expecting them to ever be as good as they used to be
I do not like it personally, I was sort of fine with the first 1,30 min of the song, later it was downhill (except the solo part at 5:30).

IMO, the problem is that most of the people (at least myself, and people I know) started listening to metal with the bands like Metallica or Iron Maiden, so there is always a special place in our heart for those bands, therefore, we expect them to always sound the same or at least improve at what they are already good at ( because that is what made us start listening to them) , and when something like this comes out, it does not meet our expectations.

For this reason I stopped having literally ANY expectation when listening to any new song, but it is easier said than done. For example my previous post about the band KASCK, I liked it because I had 0 expectations, but when you have high expectations, something that actually sounds at least decent, ends up sounding really BAD to us. But to each their own.

There are certainly people who like this version of Metallica, but usually those people were not diehard fans from the beginning imo.

EDIT: WHEN I FIRST HEARD THE BEGINNING OF THE SONG YOU SENT I THOUGHT IT WOULD TURN INTO THIS: play first 10 sec Metallica first than this song.
