Hello,

I have an Intel i7-14700 Processor. I am looking for a motherboard and found on Amazon Asus TUF Gaming z790 Plus wifi, it's in my budget and seems good, but it mentions there it supports 12th and 13th Gen processors, and some say after a bios update, I can use the 14th Gen as well. So I am a little confused, should I buy this or something else?
I have also found a motherboard, MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk MAX WiFi, but I have never used MSI motherboards; I only use Asus.
So help me with the motherboard, which one should I go for and also suggest me CPU cooler for me, as I will not go for overclocking.

Hey there,

Your CPU is not an 'x' version, so I'd go with a B660/B760 mobo. The older type B660 may need a bios update to support the CPU. But, the B760 should support it out of the box.

Something like this would be fine:
PCPartPicker Part List

Motherboard: MSI B760 GAMING PLUS WIFI ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($160.00 @ Amazon)
Total: $160.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You don't need an Z790.

The asus should work with bios 1205 or above.

I7 14700 comes with a RM1 cooler. I would try that first.
I found the cooler to be quite good. It can spin up to high rpm, but is still exceptionally quiet.

Bios 1205 or better is required for the 14700.
It was released 6/24/23 so unless you get very old stock made before then, you are ok.
Nothing wrong with MSI, but if you are familiar with ASUS, I would stick with them.
You might find a MATX B760 motherboard for less.

You don't need an Z790.
According to chatgpt, while B760 is a good practical option for CPU, Z790 gives:

  • Better VRMs (more stable under high load)
  • More USB/PCIe options
  • Higher RAM speeds
  • Possibly better resale/future upgrade value

so should i go with B760 or buy Z790.
Asus have two Z790 Prime and Plus, Prime is cheaper than Plus, can i go with prime instead of B760?
Also in summer my room temperature goes to 30-35°Celcius. should I stay on RM1 Cooler or buy something else?
Is that mentioned BIOS version on box of the motherboard?

Your room temperature is the base line for any cooler.
Put on the AC or open a window while under full load if you can.
It is the job of the case fans to get the heat out of the case.

I don't know, some packages will have the bios level.
If you buy from a local shop, they should give you new stock, or at least lend you a processor to update the bios.
I would be very surprised if there are any two year old motherboards out there.
