Which socket will have more longevity?

I am building a computer and want to be able to continue to upgrade it a while w/o having to get a new mobo so I want to go with a CPU socket type that will be used for a while. Would you recommend going with a LGA 1366 or an AM3 socket?

Wasnt sure whether to put this in the Mobo forms or in this one... sorry if its in the wrong place.

LGA 1366 future upgrades will cost $500+ though.

Only the Core i7 is allowed to run in a LGA-1366 socket, however there will be LGA-1156 i7, i5 and i3CPUs .

I'm not even digging up the recent news of the lower I7 models being discontinued on the release of I5, basically LGA 1366 is being turned into a high end enthusiast only with expensive processors.
 
Naps, the problem is that whatever you get will still need BIOS updates to handle the new CPUs, and the company that makes your MB will stop making BIOS updates for your MB at some point. If it's a lower-end company/MB, they might stop within a few months; for a higher-end MB and company, maybe a year. After that, you will have a MB that can physically fit new CPUs, but won't work properly with them.

 
AM3 or the new i5 socket should last a bit longer than anything else - 1366 is higher end, lga775 is nearing the eol, AM2 is probably going the same way.

Don't get us started on ye old 939 debacle again .... jeesh.

So if the LGA 1366 is in fact turning into a high end thing with expensive processors wont those processors come down in price eventually anyways? Also, Mondoman, does that mean that really my idea to get a Mobo that will last me 2 years til i probably want another Procesor really most likely wont work no matter how i go about it?
 
naps you have a good point ... hence Intel are discontinuing the i7 920.

Snap one up before they go ... while the price is good.

Then move over to an i7 rig soon.

This is my fourth Intel build recommendation ... my resolve is crumbling.
 
I say AM3 is gonna live longer. LGA 1366 is gonna be the high end socket so I think it's more likely for Intel to put out a newer, faster, CPU for it that just so happens not to work with ol X58 boards. Lets look at the upgrade path for skull rail. Yeah, exactly. I just think that Intel will focus on making sure that boards for it's i5 and i3 CPUs support chips for a while, OEMs don't like to redesign low-mid range systems when the magins are already low, but the fate of the LGA 1366 high end will be up in the air.

Now I'm not saying that LGA 1366 is going away anytime soon. I'm just saying that given Intel's track record, the ability of the X58 chipset to cope with those future LGA 1366 chips is really just up to a whim at ol Intel. AM3 on the other hand is going to be around for a while and AMD will continue to make chips AM3 compatible even if they come out with an AM3+ with a faster HT speed or something. Of course, it will be up to the board maker to update the BIOS to keep up 😀.

Honestly, Im starting to really like i5, as it should have everything i7 does, and not what DT doesnt, but you have to pay for in i7 anyways, which is a major turnoff to me, and many, as it rachets up the overall system price, with little return.
To the OP, 1 thing that hasnt been mentioned yet regarding s1366 is that even tho they may discontinue certain cpus , or even quads for that matter is, theres always the option of using a xeon, and those prices should remain static too because of the general market
