Here are the prices from Pricegrabber.com

X2 3800 (2.0, 1mb) - $280.91

X2 4200 (2.2, 1mb) - $350.91 additional $70.00 for 400mhz

X2 4400 (2.2, 2mb) - $447.48 additional $96.57 for 2x512mb

X2 4600 (2.4, 1mb) - $541.88 additional $94.40 for 200mhz

X2 4800 (2.4, 2mb) - $621.00 additional $79.12 for 2x512mb

looking at these prices(as of date posted) you get the most value from getting a 4200 over a 3800 and getting a 4800 over a 4600

p.s. Would someone (who knows what they're talking about) like to comment on the difference in performance by getting 1mb cache instead of 200mhz bus? and which is more important for which tasks?

Increasing the clock almost always improves performance.
Increasing the cach increases the performance in some applications.

The performance difference between the 3800 and the 4200 is greater than that of the 4600 and 4800.

Also, most of the time the 4600 (2.4, 1mb) outperforms the 4400 (2.2, 2MB) except in certain combinations of multitasking.

BTW: the 3800 is probably the best for the money.

The best way around that paradox would be to get the X2 3800+, the money that you "saved" can be spent toward a better GPU that will yeild higher gaming performances or on a better cooling system and memory, which will buy you a lot more overclocking headroom.

There is more to a computer than the CPU alone, knowing more about your budget, your planned use and overclocking preferences will allow us to make more specific suggestions.

I was going to keep my X2 3800 but instead, I got the Opteron 165 and am glad I did. I overclocked it and now, it runs about as fast as an X2 4800 or maybe even FX60.

To save money, get the 165 and put the rest in better everything else. Just a thought.

Ya know, that is a good price for that chip and I've heard you can overclock the crap out of it too.

I'm not going to get one though. I'll wait for Conroe.

There is not a BIG differene in cache over MHz in most things but there is in somethings. I would say that it's preference. If you look at benchmarks, you'll see that either way will get you an increase. The X2 3800 is the best value for oveclockers but the sweet spot is the 4400.

If you've got the money to spare, get the 4200. It's probably the best bang in that price range, at least in my opinion anyway. If anything, just make sure you get dual core. It's awesome!
