Hello,

I have a NEC MultySync LCD 1700V 17" screen that looks great on the computer
I'm using now to type this post. It's a Dell Dimension desktop with NVidia
GForce4 Ti 4200 card.

However, as soon as I plug it into the back my IBM Thinkpad laptop it's hard
to tell at first, but the text appears "fuzzy" and after a minute or two of
looking at it my eyes start to strain. It's the same if I plug it into the
port on the laptop or the docking station.

What do you think is the difference between the two computers? Is there a
way I can determine if a computer is "compatible" with my monitor?

I'm asking because I'm about to buy a new laptop to replace my aging
Dimension and I would hate to pull it out of the box, plug it into my nice
LCD monitor and not be able to use it.

TIA,

Horus

Not all monitors have the same 2d output quality. Your laptop sounds like
it just has poor 2d output. Just get something with a nice new recent
videocard.

You may be right. The card on the Thinkpad is a ATI Radeon Mobility 7500.

I have it as 1280x1024 on both which is the native resolution of my monitor.

I make mistakes typing and you still understand. Cool!

Many LCD monitors feature an "auto adjust" control which recalibates the
display to the graphics adaptor. I have an NEC 1550V LCD, which I use with
two different computers, and I experience the same issue. Using its
"auto-adjust" feature clears the problem right up.

The video output quality of notebooks is rather bad most of the times.
This has nothing to do with the 7500 chip which is not that bad.
The problem with bad quality is worse with higher resolutions. Usually
the problems don't exist at 800x600, start appearing at 1024x768 and
with your resolution of 1280x1024 there are quite a few cards which have
a bad signal.

Hi !

LCD monitors are good for only one resolution in others everything is
ugly and unreadable so I suggest U to set up your laptop with the same
resolution as your Dell is.

Isn't that rather redundant?
