Win 7/XP dual boot Installtion Error. (Antec 920)

Strange problem that I obviously can't get solved. I'm running Windows 7 and want to install Windows XP on a seperate drive. I have Windows 7 on a 120 Corsair Force 3 SSD and want to install XP (install some older games for my son) on my 1TB WD Black. The problem is that I'm running an i5 2500k OC'd @ 4.5 stable and have the Antec H20 920 CPU cooler. Everything is perfect in Windows 7 & temperature wise, idle and under load. When I stick my Windows XP setup disc in, it goes through the driver installation process, it will usually either BSOD or go to another screen saying "CPU fan error" and my Antec 920 will run at full RPM's (which is lous as hell) and then make me do a hard reboot which will return it back to normal. Some other times, it won't do a BSOD and go to another window and tell my my keyboard isn't present, CPU fan runs max RPM's again and the system become unresponsive. Everytime I reboot back into Windows 7, all is well. I'd done everything I can think of in the BIOS, set my clock speed back to stock settings, disabled every fan feature I could and even did a CMOS reset to no avail. sorry, dont know how to fix this problem, but... cant you just play the games/install them in compatibility mode? id think that would work

Thanks for your reply. Game like Putt Putt, etc will not work period. Tried everything and Battlefield 1942 won't either. Tried it all. XP was my last resort.

really? ive had BF1942 run fine, sometimes they need a little more support 😛

BF1942 seems to work ok but in only a few maps in single player. The second I load an mod like Desert Combat/Extended of Point of Existence, instant crash at loads. Not to mention, the Putt Putt game series my kids play will not work in Vista, 7 or in any compatability mode.

if your using xp you will have to enter bios and disable the high precision event timer (hpet) as it will cause compatibility issues. also disable ahci as xp cant use it while installing for the first time. you can enable it later and run the fix 1s the o.s is working.
disable all hdd's apart from the 1 that your gonna install xp on and make it the secondary boot device after the cd/dvd rom reader..
boot the machine let the install start as normal. hopefully when you dissabled ahci the cpu fan will work properly and your keyboard and mouse may show up... accept the eula and then completley wipe the hdd. meaning delete any existing partitions and create a new primary 1. fast format and install xp.

there are other ways of running xp programs on win 7. vmware will do it and should present no compatibility issues as you will be running a full version of xp all be it on top of win7. you get the vmware from m.s and just install it on win7.
to do this you can set your bios to standard config that you use for 7 but also enable virtual machine as a bios feature. not doing so will stop the vmware from installing as it will think you dont have the correct hardware.

Unplug the Windows 7 drive.
Install Windows XP to the only one HDD left (maybe has to be replugged).

Now you have two independent Windows 7 and Windows XP installations on separate disks.

After replugging Windows 7 to be your first disk, XP as second disk, you can use the one time boot key (F11 - may be different on your computer) to choose which OS to boot.

You can add a boot entry for XP in Windows 7 BCD (Boot Config Data) store using the tool Visual BCD Editor.

Run the tool and select "Create missing Windows loaders" (no parameters like drive or partition to specify). Confirm. This will add XP as second boot choice.

Reporting back. I did as you said and the same thing happened. I have no clue as to what's going on, but I think I'm going to throw in the towel on this one. It's not worth all this trouble. I'll just put together an older machine for gaming. I've tried VMWare, but the only problem is that 3D acceleration can not be translated properly in VMW; at least from what I've experienced. . Seems like the virtual world is against me, lol.
