Windows 7 Could Spur Mac Sales Instead

Cool, how many OS releases do they base this data on? What a wasted article and research. Win7 will dominate the market.

Maybe a time will come when people finally realize that you get what you pay for in a Apple Computer; more money for the right reasons. Sure I can get a $300 netbook. Or I can get a $1400 13.3" Mac Book Pro. 2x2.5ghz 4GB DDR3 Memory and Nvidia 9400M Graphics. OLED Screen and backlit keyboard. Oh yeah and about 5 hours battery life. I am a software engineer and while developing on a netbook sure sounds fun it is just not going to cut it. Try visualizing a windows and linux machine at the same time on one of those. And I use all three operating system all the time. Most of the comments on this thread are just a bunch of whiners complaining about Apple. If you don't like the article then don't read it.

shadowghost21 we are not complaining about apple we are complaining about the fact that there is no hard evidence to support his claim that windows 7 will spur on apple. of course if your on the opinion that this is a well written article then good on you man. but i think its way to subjective for the information given. if you want to talk facts then looking back on the last several articles this author wrote shows that he is a mac fan, and he is ruining this sight by shooting out opinions that are really not well supported at all. but if that's the kind of journalism you like go for it. personally i come to this sight to see whats new in technology, and to find facts to help me decide on what next upgrade i might be interested. in

"Be it more MacBooks than ever popping up at Starbucks"
and
"There's no real reason behind why a new PC technology would spur sales of Apple computers, but perhaps the big wave of new-computer-buying spirit somehow spreads over to those who are considering getting a new Mac."

Speak volumes about the author and whether or not any of this is actually "news."

Looking at your local Starbucks for computing trends, and simply making outlandish statements which you quickly qualify with "... I'm just saying..." are just...

Seriously Toms, are these people paid? I could read a 2-bit facebook rant and get the same level of "journalism."

This article is simply stating that Apple computer sales increases when Microsoft releases a new OS (WinXP was not released at Xmas, Vista was not released at Xmas). No conclusions were being made - read the article again.

As for all the other ignorant comments, that's on par for the Windows fanboys that live at Tom's. Again, people talking about something they've NEVER EVER tried -- it just amplifies how stupid most (not all) of the Tom's members are.

Oh BTW, it's called a Mac Mini and it costs $600 or $500 if you're a student - refurbished Mac's sell for even less with full warranty. And yes, you can buy 3rd party hardware for your Mac from places like NewEgg and CDW and ... Of course I wouldn't expect anyone at Tom's to actually think before they post their spew of which they have no experience.

I mean look at the "experience" level of the posters here

"I don't have a job"
"I work at BestBuy"

About the only correlation between Mac owners and Windows owners is that those that are windows only fanboys appear to be low income earners ... hmmm ... geee, wonder why!?

If you like DOS and commandlines (hey some folk just prefer 100 keyboard clicks rather than one mouse click), then OSX has this thing called "Terminal" - try it.

A few other things may help increase Apple sales of Macs:
1. Rightfully or wrongfully, they own the portable mp3 player market, to the point I say "my iPod is a generic"
2. iPhone.
3. Snow Leopard recently came out, with coinciding other software updates.
4. And I think the biggest reason, the prices of Macs are really pretty cheap, in comparison. You can get a Macbook pro (which, all Apple-bashing aside, is a nice fast machine, good graphics, bluetooth, rugged lightweight coffeehouse-friendly sort of thing) for less than my (pre-recession) monthly toss-around $ allowance.

Yeah there are cheapy windows laptops that'll do the things people use their computers for. But for a little more money you can get something nice that's not pre-loaded with bloatware, won't get you in virus trouble, looks and feels better than most windows laptops on the market. Think of what *most* people do on a laptop - a mac does a great job for that.

I'm not sayin they're the best machines for everyone. But the density of MS fanbois here, clamoring to suck up to Bill Gates' machine...

I will agree that the $300 netbooks are a bit limited, especially in the graphics department (pre-Ion netbooks), the $1500+ Macbook Pros are just overpriced to hell now that the Core i7 Mobile CPUs are out on the market. I much rather save $500+ and have a laptop with two more cores, significantly faster video processing with dedicated Vram, and faster hard drives.

There are two obvious things that is just incorrect with this article.

1.The headline : "Windows 7 Could Spur Mac Sales Instead".
Instead? As if windows 7 wouldn't generate any profit for microsoft, but everything would go to Apple. Shouldn't it had read "Windows 7 Could Spur Mac Sales also"? That is, if there is any correlation in the first place...

2. "so will this be PC's time to win some share back?". What is Macs share of the computer market? 5% worldwide? The line implies that Mac has the greatest share of the market.

This is just a silly article....

You're an elitist snob who has an over-exaggerated sense of your own knowledge and skills... another common trait amongst Apple owners.

more people that comment on this article will keep him working .... if you don't want him to keep writing articles then it would br best to ignore his future articles ( unless you want him to keep working here and just want b#tch

btw both macs and windows computers are PC ( Personal Computers unless they run a server os ) ... just common sense look up the definition

or does microsoft have a patent on the words PC or Personal Computer !!!!! i don't think so

if you windows boys don't like his articles you should learn to ignore them or you will keep him working here forever !!

macs are for yuppies, the fact macs are still around just shows the power of advertising, and how easily the uneducated sheep are swayed.

and another thing, steve jobs being voted entreprenurial whatever is simply a sign of our great culture how much someone can get paid for bold face lying through life.

i will never buy anything mac, i despise everything that company is about.

I'm guessing (so save the rant) that a new MS OS release generates interest in non pc owners. They begin to consider a pc purchase. Soon after the media and the tech guy on the tele start to carry stories relating to compatability issues etc with the new OS.
Now these potential new customers are a little put off by the 'driver issue thingys' or whatever that fellow said but want to get on the internet and do e-mail like Aunt May. They venture into an Apple store and the guy says " Turn it on here. Click here for the internet and here for e-mail" No talk of driver issues or compatability problems. Sold!
Remember some people just want to explore with technology and some want to explore technologies limits. If your on Tomshardware we know which group your in.

I'm actually trying to save money to build a Windows 7 system. I've been messing around with PC's since 1997. I worked retail during the XP and Vista launches. XP was the last one I actually was excited about. The Vista launch was as exciting for me as a root canal. Overall, I can't wait to start running Windows 7. In fact, I can't wait to try it at the local Best Buy to see what the finish OS is like.

First of all I want to tell you that I'm a Windows hater, so if you want to flame me and say I just hate Windows, go ahead. However, you should also know that I not exactly a Mac fan either.

From a typical end user's viewpoint, it's because Microsoft likes to make drastic changes to the user interface with some releases. Just compare how drastically different the user interface is from XP to Vista. People don't like to relearn a new user interface every few years. Also 64 bit Windows 7 will completely stop you in your tracks if you try to use older hardware that has no digitally signed driver. So the bottom line is: Buy a new computer where you have to relearn how to browse the web and send email and that makes you buy new peripherals or buy a mac where the user interface remains roughly the same and you won't have to buy new peripherals?

The majority of shopping occurs quite a while before Christmas. Ever hear of a thing called Black Friday? It's the day after Thanksgiving where people line up to fight over Tickle-Me Elmos and get shot over PS3s. It's called the "Holiday Shopping Season" for a reason. Windows XP was released in late October (as Win7 will be). That puts it within the range of the Holiday Shopping Season.

The reason people tell me they buy macs when a new MSFT os comes out is: "If I have to learn a new operating system, I might as well try a mac."

Both PCs and Macs are Personal Computers no matter how you look at it.

But you really have to wonder Why Jobs came up with the Name Apple for the computers his company makes and Why Apple tends to Defend their Apple Trade Marks so Aggresively?

After all, We all know that Apples are fruit and being fruit, Apples do tend to Rot!

So Why would they insist on calling it an Apple instead of what it actually is, A Computer or more to the point, a PC! 😀

Yay, ANOTHER mac spin "news" article on tomshardware.com. Honestly, 5 years ago this site was my homepage, between then and now its slowly become something that i go, "Oh yeah, i havent been on tomshardware today yet, or sometimes even this week. I'm readily getting to the point i'm not even gonna bother.

Anandtech on the other hand, may not post a lot of articles, but the ones they do are quality, without spin, without bias. Just plain ole' information.

Probably there are a lot of factors involved. One might be that when Microsoft releases an new operating system, a lot of PC users start thinking about changing operating systems. That part's kind of a no-brainer. But my guess is, that for some, they think, "Well, if I'm going to make a small change, why not make a bigger change and switch to a Mac?" And they do.
