Hi, I'm having a strange problem with Windows XP and my desktop. I've set
my desktop to Windows Classic theme and also have most of the desktop filled
with various program shortcuts, folders, and documents. Now, whenever I
turn off my computer and then restart it, my desktop for some reason
"resets" to the Windows XP theme. Even worse, all of the program shortcuts,
folders, and documents formerly on my desktop are gone. When I do a search
for them I can still locate them, but the search details tell me they are on
the desktop when clearly they are not.

If I then restart my computer, Windows automatically goes through a scan
disk to check for consistancy and finds no problems with my computer.
However, when it finally loads Windows, everything is normal again: all my
settings are as they should be and all my old files on my deskstop are back
just as they were before this problem starting happening.

Does anyone have a clue what is causing this, if there is a threat
concerning Window's integrity, and how I can remedy this problem? I
appreciate all help.

Hi,

Try this edit, then repost. Good luck!

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Other than that, check your default settings.

Wow, thanks, the edit actually worked. I wasn't expecting such a quick
solution but I certainly appreciate it! Thanks again.

For some reason the problem resurfaced today, although it was once again
resolved using the tweaks from your website. Do you (or anyone else) have
any idea on why the desktop templates are temporarily reset like this? I'm
thinking the cause could be some sort of virus (as on both occasions that
this occured, I'd visited sketchy-looking websites) or a corruption of my
registry.

I'm having a similar problem to the OP, except EVERYTHING is reset to default after reboot. Its as if its a fresh install of windows. (Desktop background reset to pastoral scene, all icons wiped out, "classic" style start menu reset to "XP" style, IE has default favorites and homepage set to default live.windows.com, even has default prompts like "Information sent over the internet may be unsecure".) Even the "Take a tour of Windows XP" pops up in the resident services bar.

My desktop icons and favorites are there under c:/documents and settings/user, and I'm logged in as user, but its not finding that stuff and putting it on my desktop or in IE.

I'm about to reinstall windows unless someone has an idea of something to try to fix this.

Thanks.

My father-in-law is experiencing something similar to this. He's running WXP SP2, I believe. I think his system is pretty old, 5 years or more. He uses for very simple stuff -- email, web browsing, and printing pictures.

He says he keeps losing the desktop background picture we setup for him. He's figured out how to put it back, but says after a while it disappears again. He powers down after each use and it does not happen every time he boots back up. Something is a miss here, I'm wondering if he has a virus. Any ideas?

TIA
