Windows Xp will not print from windows apps

Windows Xp will not print from Word or other WinXp apps. It will print form
the internet.
I am using an HP printer which has worked fine and prints well when called
up form Internet Explorer for printing. When called up from Word, Outlook,
Outlook Express or and other Win app it does not print. It pushes the paper
thru and some times prints some hash but never the document. This is a
relatively new phenomenon.
Can any one suggest what I might look for to remedy this annoying problem?

Best to look at www.hp.com and select your model printer and see if
there's any info. You could also reinstall the printer.
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>HP Printer Software and remove
it. See if there's an updated driver for
your printer at hp site and if yes install it. Restart and let WinXP
reinstall the printer.

Thanks for your response. I have already done all these. This printer is
supported in WinXP which means the HP site has nothing better to offer.
As I said it will print form IE. Which means the printer is being
recoginized, at least partially. It seems to be the WinXP direct apps that
are not sending clear signals.
