You mean it has Windows XP *Home* Edition?

By definition, an "upgrade" (as opposed to a clean installation)
means that all data, programs, etc. are kept intact.

However there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly.
However unlikely, it's always possible that something might go
wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup
of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning.

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

OK, that's fine. I wasn't trying to talk you out of it. I just
wanted you to make sure there was something in it for you. Many
Home users don't realize how alike the two are, and waste money
getting Professional when there's no advantage at all for them.

If it came with XP Home, boot to the desktop, insert the XP Pro cd, and at
the splash screen choose Install.

If it already has XP Pro you do not need to reinstall. Just go to Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Activate Windows and you will be presented
with an option to enter a new Product Key. You will then be activated over
the internet with your new product key. Pro is an excellent choice.
